I just saw DECISION BEFORE DAWN, where Werner played a German corporal, and it made me wonder. Does anyone know what Werner did during WWII? There is a sizable gap in his bio.

Briefly.Oskar was a pacifist and did not support the war. Shortly after he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1941 when he was 19, Oskar was sent to Officer Candidate's School which he purposefully flunked out of. He then peeled a lot of potatoes and cleaned a lot of latrines during the day while being allowed to be appear on stage at night. He also spent a lot of time recuperating from a fall from a horse and, later, from injuries sustained during a bombing raid of Vienna. When he was released from sick leave after the bombing, he was sent to serve in the Volkssturm. This was the last straw and he deserted, hiding out in the woods with his wife and their infant daughter during the last months of the war.

Thanks for the info, quite fascinating. Its nice to know he didn't just blindly follow the Nazis.

          You're welcome. Glad to help.
Oskar hated the Nazis. He also took a lot of heat when he made "Decision Before Dawn" but he was proud to make such a strong anti-Nazi picture.
          Did you like the movie?

Yes, it was16d0 a great movie. I had not heard of it before, just happenend to catch it on TV. I really thought Oskar Werner was the star of this movie, and should have got top billing.

I agree, a great movie. It's one of my favorites.
My guess is that even though Werner plays the main character, this was his first U.S. film and the studio had to give Basehart and Merrill, two well-known names then, the top billing in order to draw audiences.
