She's mentioned in interviews that her focus has always been her career, and that she didn't want to have children if she couldn't take care of them 100%.

The earlier commenters had wondered why ANYONE would want children. If NO ONE had children, that WOULD be a problem. (As American Dad! Stan Smith said about there being no more children, "Future generations will thank us!")
But of course, as you say, there are still billions who DO have 'em. Not necessarily the cream of the crop, unfortunately.

So true. Many people who can't afford or shouldn't be having kids are having kids. It's been shown that the poorer a person is the more kids they have, which they of course can't financially afford. The poorer the country, the higher their fertility rate.
In my case, I am the only 31 year old woman who doesn't have kids. All of my neighbors my age have kids, 99% of the girls I went to high school with has kids, I'm one of the very few who hasn't reproduced yet.

Damien: What would possess you to say such a thing? That is absolutely not true and you should use more facts and less nasty gossip.

I think the reason she still works is that it keeps her alive mentally and psychologically. Many people feel like they die inside when they have to retire.
And I think it's wonderful to be still sought after when one is 90.

This woman is NOT doing this because she's lonely- now THAT is a stereotype. She's doing what she loves. She also loves animals. Why is it that she can have a 60+ year career, and you think thatb68 her worth is only on procreating?

Kudos to Betty White for not feeling pressured into what people say you have to do in order to be normal. Seriously, people treat you like you have the plague if you don't have kids and are over the age of 28. Most people try to act like will be so enlightened if you have kids even though a lot of them are obviously miserable and regret it. My point being is that it is not required to make you happy.

Maybe she shed tears and blood crawling her way into show biz and did not want a little pest to ruin it for her or what she's achieved. Yet, maybe she knew with her success and fame, bringing a child into this world, the child would of lead and lived a miserable life. Take a close look at the children who have celebrities as parents.

Gold Moon, I think you've hit the nail on the head with celebrity parents. I have two young children, and have given up a lot for them, as has my husband. It was totally our choice to have them, and I wouldn't want to be without them now. I can understand why people choose not to have children too. My best friend doesn't want children, because she has a great career. She's happy with her life, so is her husband.
Can you imagine if Betty hadn't had the career she's had to date?
I was gonna let you beep me, but I got my rag, and I know how you hate a mess

A lot of actresses did not have children, many of them adopt children. It is a personal choice.

In regard to the first post: you seem to think the having children assures the parent of not being lonely when they are older.
Nursing homes are full of parents whose kids never visit them.
Just having children because you think they are going to take care of you when you are older, or be company for you, is not reason enough (nor valid).
Some people want kids, some don't.

Agree and why in the world anyone would want to bring a child into this world now is beyond me. They are starting out with what, $44,000 in (US) debt at birth at last count? Dogs are easier and more loving.

Having children does not guarantee someone will not be lonely, or alone, when they get older. Many children ignore their elderly parents. Some even abuse them.
As for having children. It's quite annoying that society makes those who choose not to have them feel as though there is something wrong with them.
It is indeed a personal choice. Some people aren't cut out to be parents. At least they're honest about it and don't do something just because they feel they "have" to.
I myself have no children. My spouse has 3 from previous marriage (all grown now with their own children).
I had nieces and nephews from the time I was 8 years old. So I saw first-hand at a young age how much work it was to have children and how frustrating it can be at times.
I also have very low tolerance for kids crying or throwing a fit. It's my "nails on chalkboard".
Instead, I prefer to have pets in my life and I b68shower them with attention and love. That's where my heart is. It doesn't mean I don't love kids my nieces and nephews and now great-nieces and great-nephews love me and I love them. We do have our fun together.
My not having my own biological children doesn't mean my family line isn't going to go on. Lord knows we have plenty of other family members who have pro-created. No worries there.
I look forward to the time when people will stop asking "Why don't you have (or why didn't you ever have) kids?"
Sometimes I want to just say "Because I couldn't have them" just to embarrass the person who asks so they'll shut up and think again the next time they're considering asking someone that same question.
It's MY life it's MY choice why should anyone else care but me?
