A friend of mine thinks I'm as loopy as Mr. Wilson himself, but I think The Beatles got a load of Pet Sounds and parodied bits and pieces of it in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
WOULDN'T IT BE NICE - Glissando sounding intro is sent-up in WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS
CAROLINE, NO! - Barking dogs and trains were parodied for GOOD MORNING GOOD MORNING, and then there's the silent dog whistle and backward gibberish at the end.
HERE TODAY - Harmonica section mimicked for BEING FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. KITE
DON'T TALK PUT YOUR HEAD ON MY SHOULDER - Melancholy soap opera gone berserk for SHE'S LEAVING HOME
and last but not least:
LET'S GO AWAY FOR AWHILE - Heart-tugging string section (following the Hawaiian guitar music) was sent-up by the orchestra just playing any old thing for A DAY IN THE LIFE - then there was the rumbling of the kettle drum as well as the guitar and piano combo. Instead of letting it just fade away gently, the Beatles decided to just stomp on it at the end just like the foot in Monty Python abruptly cutting out the opening theme.
Thoughts?

He heard George Harrison playing "Something" and went out and wrote "Sun King" which is virtually note for note the same thing especia5b4lly the beginning, all he did was change a few chords
Oh my God - I never made the connection - I just played the song right as I was reading your post and it's true
Good observation.

They neither "parodied" it, nor did they rip it off. "Pet Sounds" was a big inspiration, especially for McCartney who said he wanted to write a Wilson song when he composed "Penny Lane". Still, everything on "Sgt. Pepper" is highly original stuff and superior to most songs on "Pet Sounds", although I love both albums.

Something else I never mentioned was the similarity in covers - the Beach Boys are standing in a zoo surrounded by animals - the Beatles are standing in a garden surrounded by icons as well as pot(ted) plants.
In any event, it was a couple of banner years for Capitol.

You lost me somewhere in your last two paragraphs. I think what you said about taking the music from your subconscious rather than "thinking them to death" is really interesting. However, writing lyrics, good lyrics isn't easy at all and it's important for a good song. I don't think that musicians should be "leaders", either and that negative lyrics are automatically bad lyrics. Cobain, for instance, has written some very compelling "negative" lyrics.
While I don't like Rap myself, either, I wouldn't dismiss it as much as you do. It's just not my taste,b68 but that doesn't mean that Rappers don't have any talent.
Just out of interest: which modern songwriters do you think are great? -

the insight these posters have about hiphop is obviously on a very primitive and highly judgemental level. theres more to writing lyrics than "filling in the blanks" between the end-rhyme. poetry is a lot more complex than that. try listening to some of the true poets in hiphop today, say buck65 for inst111cance.
