Is it me, or is Mr. Wilson still underrated after all of this time?
Could it be because the mainstream knows him as the leader of those guys who sung about surfing, hot rods, girls, and the California sand?
Brian Douglas Wilson is certainly one of the greatest pop music talents the United States ever produced in the 20th century. No other American rock musician could possibly layer harmonies within harmonies and mix them with such elegant melodies like Wilson has done over the years, particularly when he was at his peak during the "Today" and "Pet Sounds" sessions. The mere fact that he composed such beautiful music with the Beach Boys while being 96% deaf in his right ear continues to absolutely blow my mind.
I doubt any modern American pop artist could equal or even attempt to duplicate the unique, passionate creativity and craftsmanship that Wilson has always possessed, and expressed in his beautiful music.
He's a true musical genius.
