It has been said that both Demond and Redd were active cocaine users, even on the set. I saw a documentary about Foxx and one of the writers of the show would say that Foxx would skip read throughs and rehersals but when it came time to do the show, he was always on top of his game.
And yes, it was the 1970's and cocaine was very popular and did not have the stigma it does today.
