Rape and torture victim–why is this fact always overlooked?

Aileen Wuornos was mentally ill and she was her own worst enemy when it came to defendingb68 herself. She didn't have the sanity to properly appeal to the court or the media, changing her story constantly and use petty excuses for her actions. Being raped shouldn't exempt a person from bad behavior; but she should've just been locked up and given psychiatric aid. The fact that she was killed for killing other people is ridiculous. Personally, I find it incredibly disturbing that such a malicious thing as revenge is being practiced by our "righteous" government.

" Someone wronged you, you don't keep screwing up"
Talk about blaming the victim!
This kind of attitude is one of the reasons I am a misanthrope.I discovered my wife in bed with another man, and I was crushed. So I said, "Get off me, you two!"

People rarely dig deeper to find the cause of someone's actions. They'd rather only judge their superficial actions. It makes it easier for our society to remain morally black and white. "Criminals = bad." It relieves people's consciences to separate the criminal part of the person and the human part of the person, therefore making punishment easier to deal out. Doesn't it just make you sick?

Punishment is not a denial of the fact that person's actions and traits are partly influenced by factors beyond their control. Every single person has flaws and makes mistakes, and there is likely some logical explanation for the root of them, but does that mean that the wrong choices people make in day to day life should not bring consequences? Criminals themselves aren't necessarily "bad" and their punishment doesn't imply so, it just means that their actions were immoral.
