Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Frank Zappa

    rory_j_e — 20 years ago(September 28, 2005 09:45 AM)

In "Bobby Brown Goes Down" and "He's So Gay," Frank Zappa appears to be extremely homophobic. Are these truly his opinions?
What was his problem with Boy George?

This is just speculation, I have no backup for this, but my guess is that Frank wasn't biased against gay people in general, but rather detested thier stereotype of gay culture. This is also a view I share. I have no problem with any man wishing to have to have sex with another man. I have no problem with men that happen to be more feminine that maculine5b4. But my problem lies within that stereotypical gay crowd that thinks that because they enjoy sex with men, they have to act flamboyant and annoying and demand special treatmant, yet preach equality.
And being as Frank is, if something bothered him, he'd mock it in a song, which he seemed to do. Wasn't Warren Cuccorullo gay? AT least he posed for a gay magazine I know that, and he played guitar with Frank. He probably didn't like Boy George because he was the icon of the whole obnoxiously flamboyant gay movemant and sang awful music.

What special treatment are you talking about?
While Cuccorullo was in gay porn, he now is engaged to a woman.

            Well.
I can tell you as a gay man, and as a
            HUGE
Zappa fan, that I honestly don't think he was homophobic at all. I think igotshot was right about his attitude on the subject; Zappa was definitely not gay himself, but I doubt it bothered him to think that there were gay people out there. I also think that he was turned off by the obnoxious stereotypes, as am I (I find all that kind of thing truly embarrassing).
I'm very sad that Frank isn't around today to comment on what's happening in the world, from "Will and Grace" to the war in Iraq to the gradual implosion of the Democratic party. America sure could use some of his wit and wisdom now.
The thing that was so wonderful about Frank was that he didn't have any loyalty to either party, and thought that both Republicans and Democrats were pretty much full of st. I agree with him on that point, and on his feelings about the gay issue, and several other points.
So to recap: I'm so gay, but Frank's okay; Frank is gone, but the music lives on; and Democrats suck as much as Republicans (and always will).
I don't want some renegade necrophile princess as MY roommate!

If you watch Uncle Meat, you can see that frank is very comforteble with his mascunlinty. And I can't spell that word
                Listen to Zappa.

I think Frank was more politically incorrect and brutally honest than homophobic.

Don't think FZ had much in the way of any "phobias", but the certain kind of pervasive, flamboyant gay chic must have been as ripe for parody as a large number of other cultural peculiarities he perceived as silly. As for Boy George, I didn't didn't know FZ had a "problem" with him - but if he did, I'd hazard a guess that it was that he and his music sucked (no pun intended).
