Cater to Westerners' taste ? The Chinese like her too. Her Chinese movie Sophie's Revenge was a box office success in China.
Gong Li was condemned by some Chinese too in the 90s, so was Joan Chen in the 80s. The Chinese are known for jealousy on their own people who made it big overseas.
Tang Wei was banned by the Chinese government from making movies in China and the ban was lifted only recently.
Grow up, Chinese kid. -

I have noticed a lot of hate speech like this, mostly toward women actors. This kind of comment does not belong on a web site for fans. It is the most base and horrific kind of comment, with no basis in anything. Can you please remove this! I am tempted to report it to the site managers.

I got the impression that she is mostly hated by chinese men, who can't stand Zhangs aplomb and self-confidence. I know a lot of women from Beijing and Guangdong area who adore her right for this, because Zhangs behaviour encourages them to become strong and self confident women who can handle their lifes well and without dependence from a chinese man who will look for a concubine after 5 or 10 years of marriage, like a lot of chinese men do. Go to Shenzhen, you will find a complete quarter where thousands of concubines of hong kong men live.
Go on Ziyi, you do right! -

no one hates her unless they are mentally ill.
She is a huge star around the world and one of the greatest actress' there of the present time.
She is beautiful, and fits into this movie perfectly.
Repeating hateful rumors is hateful in itself. -

The thing is in China, not many men like a woman to be strong, independent and more successful than men. Even today in China, women could go after their dreams and be successful, but they have to keep their voice down. Can not show their pride too much, otherwise some men would viciously attack them. Zhang Ziyi just happen to be one of these successful women who does not want to keep things quiet.

Pride? is that what she is trying to show? She likes attention and she got into the right business for it. There are s2000everal Chinese actresses who are independent and strong and successful and are not disliked.

Zhang Ziyi likes attention? Really? And what actor or actress gets into movies in order to maintain their privacy?
We see by posts here that Gong Li is liked even called "classy" and "role model" despite her PUBLIC affair NOT "classy" or the conduct of a "role model" with Zhang Yimou.
No, the attacks against Ziyi are essentially jealousy. Hatred of the successful. Especially when those are contrasted with the nonsense that Gong Li is "class" and "role model". -

"The thing is in China, not many men like a woman to be strong, independent and more successful than men"
That's load of crap. I am from Hong Kong and there are plenty of women who are strong, independent and more successful than their male counterparts but they are not as detested as Zhang Ziyi in Hong Kong. The reason she is so hated in the media is her off screen antic, and her ever so remindful to people of her "international star" status, which people in US don't often get to experience.
If you still don't believe it, try to compare her with Wei Tang, the actress from the movie "Lust, Caution". Tang didn't receive the same kind of condemnation from the public as Zhang Ziyi, even if both shoot to stardom through a international success directed by Ang Lee.
