Cool this article is now predicting Elle over Gerwig. Not that either is that likely to happen
Yeah, it seems to be a 50/50 situation. But even in the case of it not happening for neither of them, Elle would have at least the advantage of due to her age being a strong candidate for all those youth categories.
Supporting is weak this year.
True. Best Actor and Best Actress already appear to have clear frontrunners at this point. But everything seems to be still possible among the supporting categories. -

With
20th Century Women
, acclaimed filmmaker Mike Mills (the Academy Award winning
Beginners
) brings us a richly multilayered, funny, heart-stirring celebration of the complexities of women, family, time, and the connections we search for our whole lives.
Set in Santa Barbara, the film follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann, in a breakout performance) at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamies upbringing via Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbor.
20th Century Women
is a poignant love letter to the people who raise us and the times that form us as this makeshift family forges fragile connections that will mystify and inspire them through their lives.

Interesting that the teaser credits Elle second. Very good!
I think that could be alfabetically. At least all oder names appeared to ordered that way, with exception of Billy Crudup who is listed after "and".
But it's definitely nice that most verions of the trailer on youtube have used a screenshot of Elle for the thumbnail. -

So the film is making a statement rather than telling a story? Either way, it's sure going to get some awards buzz. Not only for the film but hopefully for Elle as well!
I also saw in the trailer, it mentioned the director also directed 'Beginners'. I'm not a fan of that film but it was very praised and an actor even earned a Academy Award! Let's hope this turns out ok and not like About Ray -

I am sure that this also has a story, but so far they haven't given us much information about that. We only have character descriptions so far, which in Elle's case is a "savvy and provocative teenage neighbor". Of course they will have to tell us more in the final trailer.
Either way, it's sure going to get some awards buzz.
Yes, all signs point to that! But let's wait for the premiere on October 8. -
