I know she was mostly hated, but not by all the fans. I even made a topic about her, wanting to know why does everybody hate her. At least here on imdb. You know, im from czech republic, where Gossip Girl is quite popular and Vanessa too actually.
Its not like all the characters on all the shows are always well liked by fans, and yet theyre still around, cos theyre fun to hate.
I cant really blame her for leaving though, they really butchered Vanessas character in season 4.

Umm, producers wanted to wrap up Vanessas storyline, since season 4 ended with a cliffhanger about her, and she refused to do that. What dont you get about that?

an example of someone who actually quit, look at jessica biel
, she specifically went to a foreign country, so that she could pose topless in a magazine at 17 yrs old to get out of her 7th heaven contract
look at her career now, she's a hollywood superstar

their publicists also deny that they were fired

i was one of the Gossip Girl fans who liked Vanessa. not only because she i5b4s hot but Vanessa was most times smart enough not to over react like everyone else on that show. i did not like that Jessica chose to leave
