Neil is playing it, as he does in "O Baterista, "Der Trommeler," etc.
Check out the
A Show Of Hands
,
Rush In Rio
, and
R30
DVDs. That should clear things up.
The marimba part was originally featured on a tune he recorded called "Pieces Of Eight." -

I could be way off my rocker, but I have NEVER seen Peart use a KAT. He uses pads and triggers none of which look like a kat.
If you are talking about what I think you are talking about, he uses an 8 pad trigger device. It's not a KAT, having played them, I am confident I have not seen that in his setup.
Again, I could be way off my rocker.

Actually what he uses is a MalletKAT set up in the same fashion as a xylophone, marimba, chimes, or even piano. He plays the notes as they are on the instrument and does not trigger whole samples. The MalletKAT is also used to trigger the triangle from the "YYZ" intro, the chimes/xylophone from "Closer to the Heart", and the gong finale to his drum solo. Neil also uses FATKAT triggers down by his feet.

he's been using a malletKAT (yes a malletKAT) since A show of hands, when he got his first Ludwigs back in the mid/late 80s, it's setup on his left side (or right side depending on if he's using the rear electronic kit)
