WINCHESTER, Ohio (AP) — Seven law enforcement officers have sued rap artist Afroman, accusing him of improperly using footage from a police raid on his Ohio home last year in his music videos.
Four deputies, two sergeants and a detective with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office brought the suit earlier this month, claiming invasion of privacy. Other law enforcement officers who were involved in the raid are not named as plaintiffs.
              Pwned.
              Eventually 👇🏾
              Afroman won!
Afroman taught the Police a Lesson - The curious Case of the One-Hit Wonder
He hadn't had a hit in a long time, then the police broke into his house.
He wrote satirical songs about the sheriff's men, who sued him for USD 4 million.
The trial became a media sensation – and made his music popular again:
That's the rather curious case of Afroman.
First victim, then victor: Afroman (51) in court on March 17, 2026 in West Union, Ohio.
Afroman had a hit in 2000 with
              "Because I Got High"
              .
After that, major successes eluded him, but Joseph Edgar Foreman (his real name) continued making music. He began distributing it online in 2004, got married and started a family.
Now his songs are in higher demand than ever—because of a senseless raid.
But let's start at the beginning.
When heavily armed Cops break in
On August 21, 2022 Afroman was in Chicago when a group in Winchester (Ohio) first forced open the gate to his property and then the front door. They belonged to the Adams County Sheriff's Office — and had a search warrant.
The charges are serious: Possession and trafficking of drugs, as well as kidnapping. The suspect is not at home. The police find only his wife and two children, aged 10 and 12. They search the entire house. His wife calls Afroman to ask for the safe's code, otherwise it would be blown open. He gives them the number.
August 21, 2022 in Winchester, Ohio: The police pay Afroman a visit. Surveillance cams record everything.
The officers find no drugs at Afroman's – the singer of
              "Because I Got High"
              – location: The tip from a police informant turned out to be trips. The kidnapping allegation was also unfounded. The application for the search warrant referred to a dungeon in the basement where people were allegedly being held captive.
Afroman's house doesn't have a basement, but it has video surveillance inside, as the only woman on the sheriff's team discovers. She disconnects one of the cameras. The police confiscate USD 5,000 and inform Afroman that they aren't liable for the damages, which the singer estimates at a total of USD 20,000.
Afroman writes Songs about the Cops
Legally, the 51-year-old has no recourse. When he gets his cash back and USD 400 is missing, Afroman decides to fight back with music. He writes a song, uses the footage from his surveillance camera and releases the track
"Will You Help Me Repair My Door"
              in December 2022.
Afroman 🚪 Will You Help Me Repair My Door (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
In the song, the sheriff's men are subjected to ridicule. Afroman, for example, mocks the fact that one of them is gazing longingly at a lemon pound cake in his kitchen.
"Are there any kidnapping victims in the pockets of my suits?"
sings Afroman, while the images show the police in his dressing room.
              Officers search Afroman's clothing.
"Why are you stealing my money? You represent the law,"
the song disputes – as it does the interruption of the cameras. And this isn't the only song. Afroman follows up with
              "Lemon Pound Cake"
, a song that mocks the overweight officer who was eyeing the lemon pound cake in his kitchen. It even suggests he looks like Peter Griffin from
              "Family Guy"
. And then 2 other songs
"Why You Disconnecting My Video Camera"
              and
              "Licc 'em Low Lisa"
              target the sheriffs.
              The Delicate Game of Defamation
The songs resonate — and not just with the audience. Six men and a sheriff's wife file a lawsuit against Afroman. His campaign brought
"humiliation, ridicule, emotional distress, embarrassment and loss of reputation"
upon the plaintiffs, reports the Los Angeles Times.
A defamation lawsuit is granted, and the trial is scheduled for March 2026. The American Civil Liberties Union supports Afroman, who invokes the right to free speech. The plaintiffs must now convince the jury that they suffered as a result of Afroman's art.
Court hearing on March 17, 2026 in West Union, Ohio.
This proves difficult. A debacle is looming early on. The songs in question are in high demand, even before the trial begins. And in the courtroom, all the relevant pieces are played again.
              "Officer Poundcake" keeps getting Cakes
              [🤣]
              "Police Officer Poundcake"
for example, who had his eye on the lemon pound cake. He's sometimes called a
              "thief"
and now has to look over his shoulder
              "every second"
, he says in court. The sheriff's office is inundated with calls. He's constantly being sent cakes
              "by different people"
              , he complains.
