Sgt. Pepper's is probably the better album, but I bought Rubber Soul. I was actually in the same dilemma as you were, and I went with RB 5b4because it's an smoother listen start to finish and it feels more complete. Sgt. Pepper has the best opening and closing, but Rubber Soul is more consistent the whole way through.
However, if John and Paul had convinced George Martin to put Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever on Sgt. Pepper, then I would pick that album 10 times out of 10!!

I wish that's how it would have went down. I also wish Only A Northern Song would have been used insead of Within You Without You. That's the only song I skip when listening to Pepper.
Don't call it a comeback. I've been here for years.

Only A Northern Song took a while to grow on me, but it's a good song. It would've fit in well on Pepper. I do love Within You Without You though. But to your point I don't always feel like sitting through it when I listen to Pepper. It's really is one of those songs where you have to be in the right mood and mindset in my opinion.
I actually got my facts a bit wrong. George Martin was all for Fields and Lane being on the album but those two songs along with When I'm Sixty-Four were the only songs they had recorded at the time and the record label/company was demanding single. They did go the right route overall but maybe releasing Penny Lane/When I'm Sixty-Four as the single and reserving Strawberry Fields for the album, or vice versa would've been the right choice.

Yeah, I don't hate Within You Without You, but for me it just seems out of place qnd kills the flow of the album. I read that the reason why Its Only a Northern song wasn't included on Pepper was because Lennon and McCartney didn't like the song due to it's subject matter.
I did read where Martin said putting Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane out a single was a huge mistake, but at the time he thought that putting out a "super single" was a smart thing to do. Its kind of a strange thing to think about these d5b4ays. Had Pepper happened now those songs would be on the album and released as a single.

I'll give the nod to Rubber Soul which was the beginning of their streak of great albums and the band's first foray into folky and psychedelic sounds. It's also just a great collection of songs that often gets overshadowed by Revolver and Sgt Pepper.

Yep, that's my all time favorite Beatles album.
