The Long and Winding Road. For the sound/lyrics and due to the fact that it was the last song The Beatles ever did.

Yes - I was only 11 years old when this was released, but I felt the full sadness of both the song and the moment.

                You Are Not Alone- MJ
You Can Never Go Home Anymore- Shan Gri Las- I think I read that the lead singer was actually crying while recording this.

'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails is gut-wrenching.

Yes Mother by John is heart wrenching. You could tell he is still hurting emotionally by his parent's actions.

Tears in Heaven should top the list. In fact, it should be the top three spots.
Has anyone every heard the Carpenters version of Ticket to Ride? It starts with a beautiful classical bit, then the slow opening vocals of girl who was tormented with inner demons and self loathing I think I'm gonna be sad It makes me cry. It also makes me wonder why the Beatles recoded it as an upbeat song.

As Revolver95 pointed out "Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton is definitely up there. I also put "Special Girl" by Eddie Schwarz as a sad song in some notable ways, and "How To Save A Life" by the Fray; I CANNOT watch the Bridge to Terabithia video version of that song; all these songs depict the impact the past has on us, and it is not always in cheery ways.

Among my favourite sad songs are the following.
"Special Girl" by Eddie Schwartz - the best love song ever
"Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones - competes with above for the best
"How To Save A Life" by The Fray - I CANNOT watch any of the videos for this; I would likely be in tears very quickly
"A Touch of Grey" by the Monkees - surprising melancholy from a "fake" band ; this proves they were a real band
"Mystery Girl" by Roy Orbison - it's Roy Orbison, folks, if that high note don't get ya you are HEARTLESS
"Yesterday" by the Beatles - they did good ballads as well
"Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton - this plus the story behind helped to define love in the 1990s'
"Someday" by Concrete Blonde - Johnette Napolitano has obviously experienced the end of a relationship
