For me, personally, it can go down to loyalty from her fans more than her "connections" (you really can't help who you are friends with) well for me at least. A lot of people like the way she sings (and her singing has improved a lot) plus she is adventuring out into other mediums eg producing tv and does do acting.
Nostalgia Chick (on YouTube) pointed out that people like listening to music that they can sing along to and although the artists that you have mentioned are "stronger" in singing, we as a general public, can't reach that level and therefore go for what we can, this is the same reasoning that makes Britney Spears more popular.
People have different tastes and it is all for fun
It can also depend which country you are in, because not everyone is famous everywhere -

I understand her fans like her singing and you're entitled to you're opinion. People can have different tastes but let's not act like certain artists are talented when they're not. People liked Rupaul's songs back in the day, but that doesn't mean Rupaul was a talented vocalist who deserved chart success. -

I'm sure she has flaws, I'm sure she is sick and tired of Justin being mentioned so I see nothing wrong with her throwing that paper out. A real fan wouldn't be rubbing a breakup in her face while she's performing.

Posts referring to Bieber for making her famous are pretty sexist since she was famous even before that. Most people also barely remember her movies, none of them are super blockbusters including the one nominated for an Oscar (The Big Short). It's pretty much Wizards of a Waverly Place making her a star and after that she's more well known as a singer rather than an actress.

Good Music and Movies as a X Disney Star she's been the most successful for those saying Bieber get real, since their break up he is clinging to her for his fame, once his fans give up on them 2 getting back together he will disappear into obscurity. Gomez has a bright future.

Not to mention that Selena can actually handle fame better than him and is a humble person compared to him. She comes out after her concerts to greet her fans. Now, I don't know if she sells meet and greets, I didn't check, but when she does it after the concert, it's free. She's been on tour a few weeks now and seems to just be having a blast and seems to be enjoying her shows. Then you have that poor kid who is sucking on pacifiers and losing his mind because he can't handle feeling like a zoo and the fame. I feel bad for Bieber to be honest. Never been a fan of his but I feel like he is not well surrounded and he will end up a mess.

She blossomed. In her Disney days, she had a following of millions, given her tv shows, movies and songs that dominated Disney Chanel. Eventually, it blossomed: she detached from Disney, still perusing acting and singing, while maintaining her immense (and growing) following and her craft matured as she's gotten older, attracting of an mature audience. I remember following her since before Disney, to now.

This is puzzling to me too. Her looks are average (there are Latina women both within and outside the US who make Selena look like a shoe), her singing is just OK, and her acting is horrible. I literally cannot believe she's the most followed person on Instagram.
However, what does come to mind as to how she's gotten so famous is the fact that she dated Justin, is friends with Taylor Swift, has tons of young fans, and most importantly, she is an American Latina, which basically makes her have an instant fanbase across the entire American continent. It is evident that Latin American fans are much more passionate about the celebrities they like, especially in countries like Mexico and Brazil, and especially on social media.
