I haven't seen a thread such as this on the board, so I figured I would start one where we can post our opinions and general thoughts on her lead single, "Cool For The Summer", from her upcoming 5th album. It has so far peaked at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100.
I really enjoy the song itself. It is incredibly catchy, has good lyrics, and great production that strikes me as a fusion of dance-pop and pop-rock (two genres Demi does well). Something about it also reminds me of 80s music, specifically the "I just wanna play with youTOO". The risqu subject matter is, well, kinda hot. The sensual whisper of "don't tell your mother" is straight-up sexy. Additionally, she delivers with a strong vocal, and something about her voice really sounds like she recorded it back in the "Here We Go Again" era; her voice sounds just like it did back then. Two thumbs up!
As for the video, my main thought is "And I thought the Neon Lights video was sexy!" She shows more skin in this one, and she looks FINE. She struts seductively down an empty alley, writhes on a bed wearing something tight, and parties with her friends, at one point teasing the viewer as if she is gonna kiss a girl. Hot as hell. The general feel coming from Demi's interviews is that she is setting her bar high this time around, wanting this album to catapult her career to new heights of commercial success, and some may think that she is taking the "Miley approach" after seeing the heights of Miley's 2013 "Bangerz" commotion. To me, Demi becoming more sexy is just a natural progression (she is 22 now, and seems more mature in general), and her sexiness doesn't feel near as forced as it did with Miley. Although it was fun watching Miley become the talk of every media outlet, looking back, her outrageous behavior comes off as more raunchy than anything, in attempts to get attention (and it clearly worked). Demi is showing off her body because "Cool For The Summer" is a sexy song, plus she looks so damn good. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the era plays out; I don't see it topping the success of "Bangerz", but I think with the right music, Demi can reach the goal of having her biggest album yet.
UPDATE So far, it's reached #11 on the Hot 100, and is starting to slide down. It has spent all 13 weeks of its run in the Top 40

I think the song is horrendous, probably my least favorite of all her singles. She does look mighty hot in it though. My favorite singles by her are
Give Your Heart a Break
,
Heart Attack
and
Neon Lights
. I feel that
Cool For The Summer
is a little lackluster. -

What about it don't you like?
I don't find the beat memorable and the lyrics are too youthfully cheerful for my taste. Perhaps if I was 16, single and living on a beach in Cabo I could relate better
. I just prefer her more heartfelt lyrics/songs. -

I felt kinda similar to you swittles, but then the song grew on me. And no, not because of how hot she is in the video (which I only saw last week). What I think is the issue, is that we're used to her belting it out in her songs. Vocally, CftS is more is subdued the right word?
I don't know music terms well. It's something about her going powerhouse vocally along with the emotional content of the lyrics that I find appealing overall. But I agree with the OP liking the sensual whispers. I tried, but couldn't get myself to like the chorus of Neon Lights. Something about the beat just bugged me. -

Looking at her Cosmo cover and her album cover I think she's trying to sex it up a bit, I don't see her going to Miley's level though

The Song inst that good to me at all. I find it trite, but its catchy as a summer , party single which was likely the objective of its creation. Demi is just having fun on this one, but this song could have been so much better and did not live up to potential. The chorus in particular is as generic and dreadfully boring as it gets.

This is my favorite Demi Lovato song, and I think her sexiest video. It reminds me a lot of Katy Perry's,
I Kissed a Girl
in that they both explore the feeling of being a bi-curious female, plus she looks and sounds a little like her.
