I don't claim to actually know what I'm talking about, only from experience of being decent enough to "hold it in".
First result on google:
"However, there are two other ways in which gas can escape the intestine.
First, it can be absorbed across the lining of the intestine into the blood. The gas then travels in the blood and ultimately is excreted in the breath."
Meanwhile you can be a big civilised grownup and hold it in until you can find some non-communal space to get rid of it.

Holding in farts will NOT produce burps instead.
The human body does not work that way. If you burp after holding it in it's only a placebo because it has NOTHING to do with the gas you are holding in.
Holding in farts for to long could lead to stomach cramps though. So I'd advice against it. Just do what regular people do and go to the toilet and let it rip if you don't feel like doing it where you are. -

Fair enough.
Nothing wrong with the advice in the last sentence.
Would you "advice" anyone just to let one out silently where they sit, working class style and force everyone else to smell the festering contents of their lower digestive tract? Would that be better for all of us than some little stomach cramps as a punishment for a poorly chosen diet of curry and Guinness? Wouldn't said stomach cramps have been a bet238ter lesson?

I really hate people that stink up airplane cabins. Have some common courtesy you dirty f@$%face! If you know you are going to get all stupid and nervous stomach on the plane, then take some f@$%ing beano! It's not that hard.
I bet when she farted in that passenger's face it smelled like honey and roses.

Beano won't do any good. It's rapid change in air pressure affecting your intestines. If you read my thread I said that if people are around I try to squelch it. This thread was really about Evangeline reacting to a nasty passenger. Of course her farts don't smell, LOL.

Gas happens because the bacteria in the gut can't break down the food properly. I imagine the change in altitude could cause things to move through the intestine outside of their normal schedule, preventing bacteria from breaking down said things.
Beano greatly promotes proper function of bacteria in the gut, and would likely help with your problem. You should try it next time you are on a plane, saving me from giving every other innocent person on the plane really dirty looks.
I just spent last Saturday at Disneyland cursing all the inconsiderate b@$tards that stink up the lines. So all the bad memories of other people's colons are "fresh" in my mind.
Now I think I'm going to spend the next hour thinking about Evangeline's colon.
