Well her daughter is biracial part black. So, maybe JUST MAYBE she is singing Congo Squarer for her child.future grand children etc..
And as far as her "looking black" i never noticed that at all. The first person who pops in mind when i look at Teena is Janis Joplin.
Anyway STFU

She tries to look black.
Are you saying that black women own a particular look? What exactly is it about her that is making her appear to want to "look black"? Is she putting makeup on to darken her skin to appear that she is actually black (and tanning does not mean wanting to be black), I mean what specific about her look says 'look at me I am black not white'? Maybe you are taking a stereotypical look of a certain race and placing that on an entire race as how they should look but in reality explain exactly what look is solely a black look that she was trying to pull off?
Is it her hair, makeup, clothes, jewlery et al. then remove the stereotype from that look and tell me how me how many black girl try to "look white, Asian, hispanic et al".
She tries to sing "black".
So R&B, Gospil, Soul, Jazz, Blues et al. belong to black singers only? I was not aware that genre of music belonged to any race. White people are intermixed in every genre of music just as blacks are in every genre. Just cause a genre is dominated by particular race does not mean it belongs to that race solely and no exceptions can be made. Her voice b68belonged to her, she sang what she knew and regardless if it sounded like a black woman or a white woman belting out those tunes, it was a white woman in this case, who had a voice that could break thru barriers. That does not mean she was trying to sing like a black woman.
On CONGO SQUARE, she sings about slaves, Louis Armstrong, Erykah Badu.
The album is hilarious when you realize its being sung by a white girl.
So those are people that only black people can sing about? Are you saying the album would be good and not hilarious if no one knew it was a white woman, if the same songs were sung by a black artist it would be serious? Since when does equality mean certain names, topics, dress, voice, style, and sound belong to only one specific race?
She only dates black guys.
And your point of this is? How many black guys date white women in general, how many black girls date white men? It is not something that is new for inter-racial relationships to be seen and accepted. It is 2010 not 1910.
The OP sounds more racist of white people doing anything that is even remotely close to something that a black artist acomplished. Talent is talent no matter the race or gender. While you may not see white people in black dominated music they do exist, have succeeded, and whites are not going away simply cause you want them to, same as black people and all other races. NOthing belong solely to one race in music, it may have roots in it that belong to a particular race but that does not mean it cannot make room for others, be crossed by others, and become a norm in society. There is someone in every race who can do what someone of another race can do, talent does not view color it is within a person. As far as looks go unless she was walking around with a sign that said I am black not white, I am not understanding what in her appearance made her appear to want to look black. She looked white to me, and sounded like a talented singer - no matter what her skin color she could sing (IMO).
