I like this snippet from Gold Derby's Thelma Adams article on Brie Larson (Gold Derby's present BA fav).
Oscar newbies might think Brie WHO? Shes nobody she cant possibly win. Not true. The Oscars have a long history of suddenly pointing the spotlight on a blossoming ingnue. Larson fits the bill although she may have competition in "Brooklyn"'s Saoirse Ronan. -

Thanks for that zorro. My guess is the films and performances are radically different, but what each actress accomplished can still reach a great level despite the said differences. I'll be watching this weekend for the results of Room's expansion to 20 markets because I have a suspicion that it might not play well when you are dealing with those individuals who don't normally attend film festivals. I just feel Brooklyn is a more viewer friendly film.
BTW, what is this Twitter chatter from Ireland concerning her accent? Are some people just jealous They should be proud of her instead of bitching about her accent whether Carlow or Dublin like. -

Allow me to go overboard. It's more than just a great compliment, it's as great an accolade as could be imagined. I was hoping this would happen. Maureen O'Hara was the single most famous Irish actress to make it in Hollywood EVER.
To hand the mantle to Saoirse is legend-making. -

We're seen some of what's in here before, but never quite as in depth as this excellent piece - with some great accompanying photos.

Thanks for the link to this excellent article.
Post Hanna and up until Brooklyn but excluding TH, her films weren't the kind to garner much major media attention. This is a totally different situation with regard to the quality of the film and the first-rate distributor:

Thanks zorro. Are you aware of Scott Feinberg's reaction when he finally screened Brooklyn at Toronto? Of course he doesn't vote, but for those who like to pay attention to what's going on come awards' season, his through the roof reaction to the film and Saoirse's performance can only help bring a bit more visibility to the project.
I love that last tweet and will now appropriate it for the Review/Reaction thread. -

I've seen a photo of Saoirse on the Tony Red Carpet, and she looks stunning as usual, but it's hard to engage with that at the moment when I've been watching the murder of a young singer and the nightclub murders in Orlando on CNN for the last day or so.
I loathe to politicize Saoirse's page but I have to say that no matter where anyone of us lives, whether it be the US, Ireland, France or anywhere else in the world, we should never succumb to acts, threats or intimidation from violent extremists and terrorists. Neither should bigotry, misogyny or bullying be acceptable as a catalyst for change. -

Well said zorro. Despite the billions spent on intelligence gathering and law enforcement, there will always be occasions when one acts out whether from mental instability or misguided passion/bankrupt ideology. One of our greatest problems is the ability of private citizens to purchase extremely powerful weapons that have the capacity to inflict great carnage in a very short period of time. Until we are able to enact radical gun control legislation, we'll continue to experience these kinds of "mass shootings."

The seagull is more of an ensemble piece, but if the director wants, he can focus on her character and make it seem like she is the lead( like what happens in The Crucible movie with Abigail). I don't know if its true thought.

This really isn't news but a small number of tweets from a film writer that'll put a smile on jlent's face:
Tomris Laffly @TomiLaffly Jun 18
(Though I absolutely never undervalued Dario Marianelli's score, Jacqueline Durran's costumes & Saoirse Ronan.)

Think I undervalued/unfairly dissed many aspects of Atonement in '07. This film's a stunner. Already planning a 10-yr anniversary piece.

This might just be the best fashion moment in any 21st century film.

My God, Saoirse Ronan is even better than I remember. -

I had to go find the originals. "best fashion moment in any 21st century film" is Celia's green dress.
If you ever want to be amazed and have some time to kill, watch "I Could Never Be Your Woman" and "Atonement," made a year later, back to back.
Mind. Blown.
