What hurts my ears is when English speakers stretch the name to Man-
gee
-ó-nay. It's only three syllables in Italian: Man-jó-nay. They elide unstressed I between G or C and a vowel the way we do with the E and I in Georgia. They spell the name Giorgia, but it sounds virtually the same. Stressed I as in
Gia Scala
is different.

The Media are pronouncing it Man-gee-ó-nee - same as the way I heard Chuck Mangione's name pronounced back in the day. I guess some things never change. -
