yet again downplaying slavery and saying a totally misguided and ignorant statement, pri5b4son is prison, and regardless of race people are put there based on THEIR crimes. Slaves are abducted and sold into a life of hard labor with no pay and horrible treatment for doing nothing wrong OH YEAH thats totally the same it really bothers me people saying stuff like this because its just so ignorant and uneducated especially a black man making that kind of comparison, it shows a lack of respect and understanding for those who where slaves

@LaMarcus: yea I'm so ashamed to live in this country for the way it thinks just because a guy rapes someone or robs a store or dropkicks a mom and her baby they can just cast him into a sheltered institution and feed them better than other countries feed citizens. Sickening system.
I can't even go outside without being paranoid that the white man will force me to sell drugs or drive on a suspended license or something. No justice for people like me and slaves. I'm glad someone smart like you finally sees things my way. Someday I can only hope that my grandchildren receive reparations from the family of the person who I stabbed and sent me to modern slavery. It won't repair the harm they caused me, but it'd be a start.

I realize now that you were being sarcastic, but I stand by what I said for anyone who actually does think John Legend was right.

The coward and moron also said blacks' right to vote was under attack. He forever tainted his career with that idiocy.

Who the hell is this clown and why did he use an awards show to spew his hatred, and cry 'racism.'
Glad I only read about it, and didn't actually see this sideshow! So sick of these so called 'celebrities' using award shows to spew their political agendas. Save it for the news station next time you idiot!
Knock if off Napolean make yourself a dang quesadil-la!

I was wondering if this subject would be under discussion here.
Add me tho the list of those who were completely turned off by the remarks. Honestly I normally don't watch the academy awards. I haven't for several years. However I was invited to a friends house for dinner and the awards were on so I stuck around for a while. After Legends remarks, I promptly left the house in disgust. I like some of Legends music by my support of him or his music has ended along with any respect I had.
Legend is where he is at today because he had talent and chose an honest path to seek his dreams and goals. he is in a country where that is possible and he and millions of others are witness to that.
He could have chosen a path of crime and dishonesty. If he did so, he might well be incarcerated if the crimes were serious enough. Such a fate would be appropriate.
The biggest issue in the US is black on black crime. Do black victims really WANT the perpetrators to NOT be appropriately punished or removed from the streets where they can not continue to terrorize. No rational person would want this.
In the US, prisoners have certain RIGHTS. There are countries where no such rights exist. Penalties for some crimes would be considered barbaric as opposed to our system. Ours isn't perfect but perfection is not achieved by failure to adequately punish those who are guilty.
MLK didn't support violence or criminal activity. He wanted black people to have the opportunity to achieve and reach the same potential as anyone else. Again, the Academy has hundreds of examples of people who have dine just that. Almost everyone has supported them in their efforts, both black and white. That was Kings vision.
Slaves had no ability to achieve anything beyond what their owners would allow.
Those who are incarcerated threw away their freedom because of their actions. Nobody is really responsible for that but themselves.
Voting rights should be uniform. I disagree that every state has a different set of rules, but a certain set of rules should be in place for everyone. You cant have a no rules policy.
I agree with another poster who said that awards shows are not the time and place to spew racist views, political views, and any other personal stupid agenda. The respect he has lost by people who admired his rise to fame, by perusing an honest path; will be offset by those criminals who feel that they should not be punished because of their "misfortune" (as THEY see it). I hope the loss or respect is worth it.

re5b4dgalaxy, please don't use offensive terminology, this is a discussion about recognizing the vast difference between slavery and those who are currently in prison, and how ridiculous and disrespectful Legend's comparison was to those who suffered as slaves and slaves who currently are suffering today. Only educated and respectful responses are needed.

No luck in that department I'm afraid, I think that's what they're genetically predisposed to do.

So, there's a lot of blacks in prison, ok, that just means a lot of blacks commit crimes. I didn't hear the speech though, what was his point?
