A Hollywood is bad for her. I wish she'd keep working on independent projects. Mainstream is toxic.

I know it's an old thread but I want to put in my 2 cents.
I stumbled across her because of her movie with Ellen Page (The East).
After looking up some pictures of her I thought: uh, she's a beauty but she has the evil eye.
And after reading through her bio and some details of her filmography I was sure: she's poison.
I wouldn't trust her my dirty laundry.

What in her bio and filmography makes you think she's poison?

She was bor5b4n into a pretty rich family, and even after getting a bachelor in economics still decides to go to - wait for it - Hollywood.
Beautiful rich girl wants to get famous in Hollywood. That's new.
But wait, even though she didn't really have a big success she is able to produce movies? Where did the money come from?
She heavily promotes herself. She writes and produces her own movies - AT THE BEGINNING OF HER CAREER !!!
If DiCaprio produces his own movies that's a different thing - still questionable though.
When she talks about her writing, it's "my" script, "I" wrote it, yet, Batmanglij or Cahill is credited as a writer, too. Wouldn't it be fair to at least use the word "we"?
And here are some pretty pompous quotes:
but not having to wait for permission. You can choose yourself.
Hmm, who should play this part? I nominate me!
            All right!
to act is [] the hardest thing in the world for me to do. I can't think of anything harder.
I could probably be a heart surgeon easier.
            That's a pretty skewed attitude.
Sure, I don't know her, and some people speak quite fondly of her, still, all of that leaves a bitter taste.

To each their own, I've really liked all the films she's been in. Its quite refreshing to see films that make you think, where there's actual storytelling. She's a confident woman, that doesn't bother me.
Another Earth really touched me, and from what I've read, she did the lion's share of the writing.
As far as the privilege thing, we hear that a lot these days. I don't buy it. Successful people nurturing and edifying their children to become successful adults is a good thing. Its something that should be celebrated.

I agree with that point. I too liked her movies, well written and well executed.
That doesn't change the fact that it's quite unfair towards all the other young actresses and actors who cannot afford to sit down for a year and produce their own movies.

Should it? I tend to agree, but isn't it better if people learn to work for their success?
It always irks me when people proudly present "their" successful career that was basically paid for by their parents.

Sadly that's how it is in all careers. Having rich and supportive parents will always be an advantage (regardless of talent) to starting out and essentially being able to pay yourself to do something full time. I've made 2 feature films without any help and it's really tough seeing people get film after film funded from mummy and daddy to get them moving faster, but that's life. Hell, even the likes of Christopher Nolan, JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson, Spielberg, Lucas etc all came from either rich or supportive (or both) upbringings So Brit Marling is hardly any different. But it is annoying, however if they all continue making art that i want to see, i can hardly complain. Whether they'll get to see my film (that i can't afford to show all around the world) is another matter!!

Yep, one might say that Brit aspires to be the Gigi Hadid of the movie industry.

You can hardly blame a person for their parents and upbringing. They have zero control over either. Is it an advantage to have connections? Yes. Are connections something to be ashamed of or chastised for? No. Some of us are born with a foot in the door and some of us aren't, but everyone in this world networks regardless of their line of work, and everyone uses their connections in some way or another.
