What is that noise she makes?

Personally, her characters voice grates on me. That is not the way to open a series of any tv show. I know there is a reason behind everything in the wire but for international viewers (like myself and many others I have spoken to) it was unintelligible and sounded stupid.

I disagree. I'm an international viewer and I understood every word. I guess you just have to have led a life where you've had regular contact with people who speak like that. I thought her voice was terrifying, like G-Man from Half Life, it just won't stay put on one pitch and has masses of irregular inflections for no reason.

Pearson is a Baltimore native and that is her real accent. It is even hard for Americans to understand.
Still, I really like that there is such an authentic voice in the program (although for one scene I did have to turn on the subtitles and watch again). -

Well, it's a good thing you weren't responsible for the authentic and laudatory creativity that made this the great show that it was! And, being that you refer to yourself as a so-call "international" viewerquiet on the set, and let the local folks that know the region do what they do!

She is awful, the character that is. I just wished someone would shoot her through the whole time she was in the show. That could possibly mean she's a good actress or that there is some evily good writing going on.

That noise is trippy, and it doesn't show in the subtitles. I watch the entire thing on DVD w/subtitles, a lot of the dialogue happens offscreen while we watch reaction shots.
Her character is fascinating. I'm almost thru Season 4, and want to know what is her relationship with Chris? Where did she come from? How did she get that way, harder than any B-more man? Why does Marlo trust her so much? Awesome. -

Thanks! I did see that too in the subtitles, I'm misremembering it as "ya heard". Strange, but I'm American-born and still needed subtitles to parse out the intent of this ghetto-patois.
I had to do the same thing on "The Shield", and there the creators/writers also decided (like The Wire) to use a modified vocabulary. In the DVD extras, they were saying that their 'consultants';-) told them the street language changes so quickly that real-time vocabulary would be outdated very quickly. It certainly wouldn't stand up to time, and would mark the series at a certain point in time.
Anyway, thanks. Also, she was in the news a few days ago for refusing to testify at her friend's murder trial.

This is the kind of thuglife ghetto behavior that will ensure things never get better for B-more, and frustrates the "murder police"! Cheers!
