She is the main reason I am starting to watch the entire series. I thought she was great in the "Last Christmas" Episode. I really like the new Doctor as well. I started with the new series 2005. The Doctor is likable and funny, and Rose is ok.

To me she's the most complex and likable companion. She's flawed 16d0and incredible human, and I like that. Characters need to be more real, and her development in the series 8 was amazing for doing that.
But you last sentence is right, Clara is very egocentric, and this is not just an impression. She is written to be like a mirror of the Doctor, and that's the way he is. I personally like that, because the relationship between the Doctor and companion becomes much more interesting. -

The key thing in this discussion is the date of the posts. I could not help but notice that all the early posts from last year are quite negative. In fact I really disliked Clara in the beginning, but I think she has greatly improved as a companion in season 8 because the writing is much better. During Clara's first year as a companion, Matt Smith's last season as the Doctor, I thought the writing was lazy and weak. However, I find it much improved in season 8 with the 12th Doctor. The stories are better and the dialog is sharper.

Yes, to me she's a a very current women who wants to be in a relationship as equals, while the other companions were fine with him being the Doctor and them being the companion.
As course, she isn't a Time Lord, so there are problems to that, but that is what makes her interesting. She has a spirit of adventure and a determination to match the doctor, but she's only human and can't really ever be his equal. I thought that was a lot of what her relationship with Danny was about.
Definitely my favorite companion.

For me it was Clara that got me to like this Doctor. I wasn't sure at first and neither was her character in the first episode last year. When she got the phone call from Matt Smith'so Doctor Who and told her his vulnerability and needed her help. It was at that point that I began to see under the strong and rough exterior is a person who has doubts and scared. It was Clara that helped build his strength and face his fears. This has been more introspective of the Doctor and I'm personally enjoying it. Everyone has their own opinion of course.

Clara/Coleman (abetted by Moffat's awful mishandling of Who) annoyed me from day one to the point I took a hiatus from the series, just as I did during the time of the insufferable Ace, after having watched the Who from the mid-70s (somehow I managed to shut out the shrill whining of Peri). I couldn't stand Rose/Piper either. Martha was all right, though her character was not well written. I preferred Donna and Amy during New Who. I adored Sarah Jane Smith, Leela and Romana (especially Romana II), though I also loved Tegan, Nyssa, Turlough, K-9 and even the much-maligned Adric. As Searching for Neverland said, to each his/her own.

I liked her as the Impossible girl with Matt Smith as the Doctor. Not sure she fits as well with this new doctor. I think the actress that played the Mistress could have played a better companion for him. Not as the same character but I did see some chemistry between them.

I absolutely adore Jenna Coleman as an actress and I loved Clara in season 7B but the character of Clara suffered from the following problems throughout her run though they became worse from series 8 on.
1/ She fell into the New Who companion formula where the companion has to follow this basic story. There is a mystery about her that forms the story arc of the series, it turns out that this mystery is to do with a big battle with one of the Doctors worst enemies in the finale, it'll probably be a paradox of some kind, one of the Doctors enemies might have even brought her and the Doctor together. In the end she will get super powers and thrash the villain easily whilst the Doctor stands at the side like a tit.
These story arcs are AWFUL. To start with they are very limited for obvious reasons. In terms of the story arcs a series can have its just "a big monster wants to destroy everything and the chosen girl is going to kick his a$$"
In terms of characterisation it limits what the female companion can be. Just a seemingly ordinary girl who is in awe of the the Doctor, but then surpasses him. It also leaves no room for development as once they have become the most important person in every universe then really where else is there for them to go? Rose and Amy both faltered after their first series and Donna only didn't because she left.
Its also often demeaning and emasculating to the Doctor and his enemies. Look at the Daleks in Journey's End all getting slaughtered by Donna, the Intelligence getting beaten by an ordinary woman or Missy who's plan makes her look silly in bringing them together.
As for the Doctor well its this having his companion being better than him that led to things like him saving the day in 1 out of 4 finale's in the RTD era. Added to that the Doctor will be infatuated with this impossible girl or be so dependent on her that he will seem like a clingy love sick emo teenager as opposed to a sweet, doting professorial character like he should.
2/ She had no chemistry with Capaldi. I think it was more because of her prior relationship with Smithy that they couldn't get anything going with her and Capaldi. Matt spent series 7 drooling over her a$$ and it was demeaning to his Doctor too, but he and Jenna were such a good fit that it didn't matter.
Sadly with Capaldi who was older this left them in a pickle. They could not make him a fatherly figure to her, but they couldn't make him a boyfriend figure either. At the same time they couldn't make him just a friend.
That's the thing about the Doctor an older man hanging out with young women he needs to be completely asexual or else it will seem creepy. And thus an older new Who Doctor was always going to seem quite creepy around a young woman, but they make it even worse by hinting that he STILL fancies her.
3/ She is sadly too smug like a lot of Moffat's women like River Song, Amy Pond, Irene Adler. Its his style as its very 90's sitcom crap to have a man lust after some smug woman. Look at Kochanski in Red Dwarf and her from Not Going Out for other examples. That's what Moff turned the Doctor and his companion that should be a Holmes/Watson type relationship into.
Now to be fair all of these problems applied to previous companions in New Who, but as Clara is the latest arguably they were worse with her.
