The film is one of the top 3 favorites to win the Palm d'Or, according to the oddsmakers.

I hate that image of Mia that was selected for the poster, but it's pretty cool to see it on the street like that.
I really hope that Mia will be in awards contention herself, but the in-movie talent is too stacked.

Well the Agatha character is not going to be that physically attractive, she's disfigured with burns and she's demented (from what I understand), but it sounds like a really meaty part that Mia has probably once again crushed.

MAPS TO THE STARS IS CRONENBERG'S FURIOUS, JET-BLACK MISSIVE TO THE MOVIE BUSINESS, REDEEMING THE DIRECTOR'S PREDILECTION FOR DARK, DELICIOUSLY TWISTED NARRATIVES, SUBVERTING THE HOLLYWOOD SATIRE WITH EDGY SELF-AWARENESS, RUNNING A FREAKSHOW THROUGH BILLY WILDER'S SUNSET BOULEVARD VIA DAVID LYNCHS MULHOLLAND DRIVE. IT'S NOT ALWAYS 100% SATISFYING, BUT WHEN IT WORKS, IT'S DAMN ENTHRALLING.
All are perfectly cast, including Robert Pattinsons morally dubious chauffeur-cum-wannabe-actor and Benjies malignant parents played by Olivia Williams and John Cusack, but the real standout is Wasikowska a cunning choice of casting, remarkably extending his excellent work in Park Chan-wooks Stoker. Her Agatha is the dark soul of Hollywood, initially well-meant yet all-too-quickly pulled into the maelstrom of moral corruption and depravity that lurks beneath the sparkling veneer of celebrity life.

Oh, I'm sure Mia nails the part - she always does.
"With Agatha, there are many gradually revealed twists and turns, so you need an actress who is extremely subtle. You need someone who feels extremely open and not sinister, who seems innocent, until she reveals the depths of her dangerousness," he says. "Agatha keeps saying, I just want to make amends and you have to believe it when she says it, which requires a really wonderful actress like Mia. She is someone Ive been watching for years, even though shes very young, and has already done so many beautiful things. When that sinister side comes out of her as Agatha, its pretty staggering."- David Cronenberg

I trust that was a typo. "Maps" really does sound like a film I will enjoy.
I like this recent quote from Cronenberg.
"There comes a wonderful point when you just dont give a beep anymore what everyone thinks because youve had so many reactions that you cant absorb anymore. Youve read so many reviews you cant absorb anymore. But the first ones you really want to know because its your first articulation of a response to the movie. I mean you sit with a couple of audiences. This was my first audience last night. Ill sit with a couple more. But the first responses that tell you why they felt the way they did are always the first reviews. Now, you dont know if its really a review or some Twitterits all from journalists here, so at least theres that. How legitimate the journalists are, how good the critics are these days, as you know, its kind of an iffy proposition. You get a sense of it. Im still at the stage where Im interested in what people have to say. And you do weed out the ones where the writing is really bad and they cant spell and you usually just sort of dismiss those." -

Some good news for all the awards, GG and SAG's (I can see MTTS being nominated for the Ensemble award at the SAG's)
Maps to the Stars,
has been getting a great reception at TIFF and the NYFF. So much so that Cronenberg says it will get its qualifying run for the Oscars:
Cannes for Julianne Moores go-for-broke performance as a fading movie star, but its awards-season prospects appeared dimmer Stateside when distributor Focus World announced plans to eschew an Oscar campaign this year in favor of an early 2015 release.
When we talked to David Cronenberg Saturday night at the New York Film Festival, though, he told us to expect a short theatrical run for the film by the end of the year. They're going to do a qualifying run I think it's in New York and L.A. so that it will legitimately qualify for the Golden Globes and the Oscars, said Cronenberg, who admitted, There was a lot of discussion. You know, they really felt that they could do a better job releasing the film in 2015, in January or February. And then, of course, the discussion was, Yeah, but wouldn't it be great if Julianne got an Oscar nomination, since she won Best Actress at Cannes?
A strong recent showing at the Toronto Film Festival convinced Focus World to put the film out this year, though the distributor hasnt committed to funding a costly Oscar campaign. You know, I think the movie will find its way regardless, said Maps screenwriter Bruce Wagner. It already has.

I understand, but you take what you can get. I know Julianne is getting the buzz right now, but the more people who see the film, the more who will appreciate Mia's performance.
She's excellent in MTTS you believe she's crazy, but you still care about her. That's hard to pull off.
And I'm really thinking about the other awards, as well. A nomination for Best Ensemble at the SAG's or Best Comedy at the Golden Globes brings a lot of attention.

I'm hearing more buzz about Mia's performance on Twitter.
you believe she's crazy, but you still care about her. That's hard to pull off.
Same thing with Robyn in Tracks; she appears unlikable and prickly at first but Mia just draws you into her world.
Then there's the annoying little bitch in Ava, who just made me laugh; that's how great Mia's performance was.

So, I finally got to see "Maps" and I agree, Mia is really compelling in the film - she's nuts and dangerous, but she's also vulnerable and sweet and you care about her. This film is amazingly divisive - some find it brilliant or entertaining while some outright hate it, that's what I expected (it's David Cronenberg after all), and I can see how people could have all those feelings - the characters are all super dark (not so much Robert Pattinson, and he has some touching moments with Mia). On another site I said it was kind of a satirical, greek tragedy, soap opera from hell - it's both compelling and repelling. People should see it for themselves - I saw it a second time and there are a number of layers to it that can bring up a lot of different things, I really find it fascinating, but it IS disturbing, though often funny. Mia and Julianne Moore are in another whole universe than they were in "The Kids Are Alright" - they definitely aren't alright here, but I thought their scenes together REALLY worked. All the acting is superb.
