Read his bestselling autobiographical memoirs, "Taking the Lead". In it, he writes that he was born and brought up in the Mormon religion but stopped practicing it quite some time ago.

I read his book as well and it sounds like he hasn't really been a practicing Mormon since his teenage/early adult years. Probably partially due to the fact he was raised by Mark Ballas' family for almost 10 years in England. He describes his upbringing as "Very Mormon" but then stops talking about when he moved to England with Mark's family. He respects the Mormon church but sounds more like a non-religious believer of God and is quite spiritual.
