She would have been a really great Katniss, but quite honestly, I think Jennifer Lawrence has the edge in the acting department (Steinfeld is fantastic, but Lawrence's performance in Winter's Bone was just mind-numbingly amazing). I'm just glad this movie is being taken more seriously than Twilight and even Harry Potter.
I understand your disappointment, but this doesn't mean the movie will be any less good.

well according to variety, the reason why they hired jl over all the others, including hailee steinfeld, was coz of the age factor. they also wanted a more well known popular actor to play the role of peeta and there are hardly any around hailee's age. and i think they're also trying to appeal to a more older crowd rather than just a younger one. btw, jl might have more of an advantage in acting than hailee does right now, due to being in more films. after all, hailee wasn't really in any major or even indie film prior to true grit. but given more experience and practice, i think she has the talent to become phenomenal as well.
btw, here's what Gary Ross had to say about the role of katniss and what actress they were looking for:
Theres already quite a bit of hand-wringing that, no matter how good an actress Lawrence is, at 20 shes simply too old for the role.
First of all, I talked to Suzanne extensively about this. Suzanne saw every single audition. And not only did Suzanne not have an issue with Jens age, she felt you need someone of a certain maturity and power to be Katniss. This is a girl who needs to incite a revolution. We cant have an insubstantial person play her, AND WE CAN'T HAVE SOMEONE WHO'S TOO YOUNG TO PLAY THIS. Far from being too old, she was very concerned that we would cast someone who was too young. In Suzannes mind, and in mine, Katniss is not a young girl. Its important for her to be a young woman. Shes a maternal figure in her family. Shes had to take care of Prim, and in many ways her mother, since her fathers death. Shes had to grow up pretty quickly.

I agree with you. I think Jennifer would be a really good Katniss. Or Saoirse Ronan.

lmao, of course OhWowDreadful, now you can get your panties out of a twist that the evil untalanted overrated cheati2000ng Hailee Steinfeld didn't win the Oscar OR get the role as Katniss. Now if her career ends for good and she has a life of failure you will be thrilled!
On a serious note, yeah I was kind of disappointed, she fit the description of Katniss perfectly. Jennifer Lawrence is talented, but she is too old imo. I guess we'll see how it goes. I definitely think what fifacup posted is dead on though. Jennifer has the maturity for this role, not to metion she can work longer hours.
I'm sure Hailee has more projects that will come her way very soon.

                    "I'm sorry, but.." is a self-contained lie.

i think this may turn out to be the best for hailee's career. some people can suffer the risk of overexposure and getting typecasted too early in their career. At least Hailee has a chance to work on some other great films, she has a chance to work and even improve upon her acting skills. it would be nice to see her take on a role that's diff. to the one she played in true grit.

I was probably overly disappointed. Surprised as well. When I watched True Grit, I immediately thought, "This girl is Katniss Everdeen", I was absolutely sure of it. I even texted and called my friends who share the love of the Hunger Games trilogy to discuss it. Hailee fits the bill in so many ways. Number ONE- She LOOKS like Katniss TWO-She is the RIGHT AGE! When I heard that they were making this film I had one major request, (and yes, a few others) and that was to cast actors/actresses that are around 15-18 years of age. The reasons mostly being that I do not want this to be 'sexified' too much. There is certainly a sexy element to the story already, but that can come naturally with the plot and also because this is a trilogy, which obviously takes time to complete. All the actors/actresses they are considering or have confirmed for the lead (Peeta, Gale and Katniss) roles are in their early to mid-twenties. They may be able to pass for 16.but not for long. THREE-Hollywood hasn't gotten to her yet, she is young but has the "IT" factor and would have placed all of her heart and soul into the role.
As for Jennifer Lawrence, that was honestly a curve ballnever would have guessed. However, I enjoyed her acting in Winter's Bone. And through that role, it is obvious that she can definitely take the role of Katniss in terms of being somewhat abrasive and mildly weary and has proven that she can embody the emotions of Katniss. She may not outwardly look like Katniss-as she is blonde and 20 years old-but make-up artists can easily remedy that. To be a little more optimistic and accepting, maybe it's necessary to cast a 20-something for Katniss, in many ways, Katniss should kind of look a tiny bit older as she has the weight of the world on her.
I may have been disappointed, but I'm quickly warming up to Jennifer playing the role of Katniss. What choice do we have? It's an amazing story, so if they stick to the plot, they have little room to screw it up!

                            The 3 Leads:
Jennifer Lawrence is 21 (20/21 during filming).
Josh Hutcherson is 19 (18/19 during filming).
Liam Hemsworth is 22 (21 during filming).
They are a little older than the roles, but nobody is in their mid-twenties (24-26) just yet. The oldest one, Liam, turned 22 this January. And Josh is still a teenager.
OTOH, I hope they film the next two movies soon before they get much older. Otherwise, they will be in their early and mid-20s by the time the filming is done. I see that
                            Catching Fire
is set for a late 2013 release. I hope
                            Mockingjay
is filmed back to back, even if they spread the releases a bit.
Clove (Isabelle Fuhrman) is 15 now so she was only 14 when the movie was filmed. So there were younger kids in the movie as tributes. I think the leads focused more on acting ability (which tends to get better with age) and the tributes were close to their real ages (sometimes maybe a year or t238wo younger) to make you feel what was going on more. If everyone was 20 then it wouldn't be the same because the youngest kid is a small 12. You really feel sad for the little kids having to go in there and fight to the death. Prim (Willow Shields) was 10/11 during the filming and her character is 12.

Hailee was considered but her age worked against her. She is under 18. Jennifer was already a legal adult (over 18) which makes it less complicated legally for the studio. Hailee may not start getting those lead roles until she is 18 or older.
