    Ladies of the Chorus
    (Phil Karlson, 1948) 7/10
Former burlesque star Mae and her daughter Peggy dance in the chorus. When Mae has a fight with featured dancer Bubbles, Bubbles leaves the show and Peggy takes her place. When Peggy falls in love with wealthy Randy, Mae fears that class differences might lead to misery.
Marilyn Monroe in her first major role, as a glitzy glamorous burlesque queen with a risque edgy quality. A playful blend of suggestive and innocent manner, she was just 22 when Ladies of the Chorus premiered. Her sultry alto voice we know from the 50s and early 60s is absolutely here in 1948, transfixing the audience in song after song. Are the songs good? Most of them aren't, but that doesn't matter. They're the usual flat and forgettable songs from movies of this era that were popular. Marilyn hasn't quite yet adapted the overly breathy voice we all know her for, and hearing her speaking and singing in her regular voice is one of the memorable things about this film. She is like frothing champagne, just always bubbling and creamy. And she lights up the screen so naturally, it's incredible.
