1966 seems like a relatively poor year for movies.
    I have seen
    The Professionals
    ,
    Nevada Smith
    , and
    The Sand Pebbles
from the previous lists. All good movies.
    I guess
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
would probably come closest to being a favorite of mine.
    Fahrenheit 451
is a nice movie. I liked
    Born Free
    a lot when I was a kid. I watched
    The Shooting
a few weeks back, it was interesting.
    I guess I would rate
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
    and
    Fahrenheit 451
as 8, perhaps I would give
    The Sand Pebbles
an 8. The others are more like 7's.
    So my list is
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
    Fahrenheit 451
    The Sand Pebbles

I tend to find foreign language films a bit of a mixed bag, some that are rated highly I find somewhat lacking - and there are not too many I would rate at 8 or above.
        Of course,
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
is really an Italian film, so there is one I would rate an 8.

Leone was a director I couldnt get into, though.. I like De Sica, Visconti, etc. But I think per capita, I probably like foreign movies more, and to be specific, probably 1960s Eastern European. Movies about people, and not so conformist. After seeing thousands of movies, I can't watch classic movies from the 30s anymore. Noir - forget about it. ONce you've seen 200, you have seen them all.

For me, 1966 was a great year for film. Here is a list of my favorites of 1966, taken from the below list of films from '66 that I really liked - films that I know I have watched at least twice - sometimes 3 or 4 times:
                  Harper
                  The Oscar
                  How to Steal a Million
                  Gambit
                  Funeral in Berlin
                  Kaleidoscope
                  Khartoum
                  El Dorado
                  The Sand Pebbles
                  The Silencers
                  Lord Love a Duck
                  Penelope
                  The Fortune Cookie
                  The Sand Pebbles
                  Seconds
The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming
*The Spy Who Came In from the Cold *This had a December, 1965 release in the U.S, and a January, 1966 release in the U.K. As such, some sites list it as a 1965 film, others list it as 1966.
                  Our Man Flint
                  The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
                  The Silencers
                  Murderers' Row
                  Lord Love a Duck
                  Harper
                  The Sword of Doom (Japanese)
                  The Oscar
                  The Trouble with Angels
                  Django
                  Tokyo Drifter (Japanese)
                  Our Man in Marrakesh
                  Arabesque
A Big Hand for the Little Lady
Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!
                  The Glass Bottom Boat
                  Nevada Smith
                  Assault on a Queen
                  The Endless Summer
                  Walk, Don't Run
                  The Blue Max
Around the World Under the Sea
                  How to Steal a Million
                  The Wild Angels
                  Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.
What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?
                  Ambush Bay
                  After the Fox
                  Mr. Buddwing
                  Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round
The Poppy Is Also a Flower
Not with My Wife, You Don't!
                  Is Paris Burning?
                  Penelope
                  Triple Cross
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
                  Rage
                  Blowup
                  Gambit
                  Grand Prix
                  Funeral in Berlin
                  The Chase
Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs
                  Dracula: Prince of Darkness
                  Kaleidoscope
                  Khartoum
Morgan – A Suitable Case for Treatment (also called Morgan!)
                  The Ugly Dachshund
                  Zatoichi's Pilgrimage (Japanese)
                  El Dorado
There are other memorable films from 1966 that I've only seen once, as far as I can remember:
                  The Professionals
                  A Man for All Seasons
                  Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
                  Torn Curtain
                  Hawaii
                  The Appaloosa
…and last but not least: Manos: The Hands of Fate (yes… this one was very "memorable")

That is a lot of movies. It would seem to be stretching the notion of
                    favorite
                    a bit.
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
is listed as a 1965 movie on IMDB.

Yes, I suppose I could trim that list down a bit. But I will leave it as is in the hope that maybe, if some of those titles have been overlooked by people, it will serve as a source of inspiration for them to go check them out.
                      As to
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
being listed as a 1965 movie on IMDB, I now see where technically that is correct. It was made in 1965 and released near the end of December in the U.S. - but not 'til the middle of January of '66 in the U.K. - even won the BAFTA Award for Best British film at the 1967 BAFTA Awards, which honoured the best films of 1966 - which I suppose is why I found it included as a 1966 film on the list I was using. I will go back and add that info above to clear up that confusion.

Those two didn't make my final cut, but I did include both of them in my list of over all favorites of 1966 in my above post.

what about thunderball? oh and don't ever support rotten tomatoes we all need to ban and delete this website from existence forevermore. they put pretty woman at just 65% and mystic pizza at 78%? put black christmas(1974) at just in the 70%s.
put gremlins at just 78% and rare exports: a christmas tale at like 95%? the comparisons of these movies on this website is so wrong it's criminal. and they put silent night, deadly night at just in the 30%s or 40%s?
all this is wrong bc it makes people who haven't ever watched these movies think they shouldn't watch them if they are rotten on this website which means under 60%. or make them think the movies aren't that good when they are like bc, gremlins or sndn so then they dont watch them.

                                Thunderball
was a 1965 film (just barely: it was released at the end of December, 1965 in both U.S. and U.K.).
Rotten Tomatoes: ehh, just ignore them. I've never let their ratings determine whether I should watch a movie or not.
