I think its great. So many contrarians out there.

It's always the same cultural conflict.
The Clint Eastwood/Bruce Willis fans think "Citizen Kane" is pretentious and boring.
The film connoisseurs who like "Citizen Kane" think action films are for lowbrow guys who wanna see explosions.

I like Clint Eastwood a lot.. I'm the anomaly to everything that's important (to me), which is probably why I spend a lot of time trying to discover new things.
Even with "art-house" movies - they're all hit or miss.. I'm just really picky but wish I wasn't. I'm constantly searching for asylum.

Oh I love Clint Eastwood and I'll go even one further, I think Charles Bronson is the king.
But you can piss on Bruce Willis and The Rock, f*****g apes. I only like Vin Diesel because he's cute.
And yeah, I'm an art-house snob. But you're right. Those films are hit or miss.

To me, Chuck doesn't hold a candle to Clint. Didn't really care for Death Wish and only saw them for the first time in 2019. I like Marlon Brando for the talent, and off-camera. Steve McQueen had presence, "Wanted: Dead Or Alive" or in the couple of decent movies he did, nothing ever great unfortunately. Bogart, Pellonpaa, Mastroianni, Gena Rowlans, and a bunch of other foreigners.. I guess its easier for me to name my favorite directors.
I once tried to watch "Die Hard" during one of my regular movie slumps, and was so ****ing bored I turned it off at the 20 minute mark.
So what are your hit and miss "art-house" movies? I don't know if I'm a snob, but I have a resentment towards a lot of things, and I guess its easiest and most accurate to say my favorite stuff is from the 70s and before, although there's a handful of stand-up comedians that are good.

Well my "art-house" may be expansive. I'm not referring to an obscure Kenneth Anger film. High brow film artists I like would be Fellini, Larry Clark, David Lynch, John Waters, that ilk. They're masters who rarely miss.
I agree on films like "Die Hard". I've never sat through the whole thing. I'd class that Sandra Bullock movie "Speed" along with that as well. Boring, no content. But then again I also thought "Brokeback Mountain" was a rather sappy soap opera.

I liked David Lynch a lot when I was first starting in taking movies seriously when I was 17, but fell out of love with surrealism pretty quickly.
Do you have a ranking of your Fellini movies? "La Strada" is my #2 all-time, I liked "Nights of Cabiria", and I've always had mixed but generally positive feelings about "La Dolce Vita" (we had a long talk about decadence, or at least I did - you never responded back). 8 1/2 is one of those hit or misses between "art-house" fans. I didn't like it, but I've given the movie a couple of chances. I liked "i vitelloni" and thought "Ginger and Fred" was ALMOST like Gelsomina coming back to life, since the movie is about a reunion after all. Never saw his last one, something moon…. "Amarcord" had a good first half, still decent. "Satyrcon" is the one I turned off after 10 minutes (both times). I just saw "Il Bidone" and it's alright… I haven't seen "Intervista" yet.

Well I would rank "Satyricon" as number one. It plays with Greco-Roman myth, and that's a deal maker for me. I like the pre-Christian ambivalence about morality. I'm surprised that even for the lavish sets and imagery you would turn it off after 10 minutes.
Why did you not like "Satyricon"? It also sounds like you had an impulse reaction against it. I'm curious why you had no interest in watching it?
As for the decadence thread, I remember that and wanted to reply but lost track. Do you have a link to it? I'll revisit it.

Does it matter — 5 years ago(March 28, 2021 09:15 PM)
I read it on here, can't remember who but the internet seems to criticize this movie without criticizing it. Just saying "overrated" over and over isn't much of a criticism. Nice to see people with good tastes.
