Which version of the same story do you prefer? I love both versions, but my favourite is
    Red Dust
    .
Jean Harlow steals every scene she is in, so many memorable lines and scenes, and an impressive rain storm sequence.
My issue with both films is that I've never found it believable that we are supposed to just see the Mary Astor/Grace Kelly character as a serious rival to Jean Harlow/Ava Gardner's. It's obvious from the start that Jean/Ava's character are the ones Clark's tough guy is supposed to end up with, they have similar personalities and the attraction is there from the start. The other character (in both versions)is just dull.
I think Ava and Jean are at their best in both films, and each steals every scene they are in.

      Red Dust
might be the better movie, but I love
      Magambo
better because of Ava and Grace Kelly. I don't think Ava was shown off better.
      MY only beef about
      Mogambo
is I wish Gable had been replaced by Heston or Mitchum. He was getting a little old for the part (although he's not bad).

        Hi rcocean3,
I agree that Clark was a bit too old for his role in
        Mogambo
. I think Ava gets one of her very best roles in
        Mogambo
, and in some ways I think the character is close to her own personality(honest, open and fun loving). SO many lush colours in
        Mogambo
        too.
