Why does she want to look like a boy

I think her hair fits her personality - she's a happy, bubbly person and her style reflects that. Also, I think it's probably easy to care for, draws attention to her eyes, shows off her earrings which are free of entanglement in long hair, and makes her neck look longer. Stuff that may not be obvious to some, but I like it. I think it suits her, especially at this time in her life.
However, I don't think she will always keep the short style, because, as she ages and after Blue Bloods ends, her hair will associate her with her teen-aged character. She will need to distance herself from Nicki and, growing her hair longer and/or changing its color is a way to recreate herself.
In the meantime, I'm sorry you feel so strongly about her hair. Personally, I think it looks darling on her. Which is probably why she should change it as she grows up and out of her current role - it needs to grow up with her, which means, no "darling" hair styles, unless it's part of a character.
Yes, I am a Grandmother,
Linnea ?
Well, who else calls a young woman's hairstyle, "perky" but a Grandmother? -

The little girl is gorgeous. The hairstyle fits her perfectly. In the context of the show, her characterization fits right in. It's unfortunate that people are so judgemental, but I suspose when you perform in a public forum, your open yourself up to opinions.
