Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Tom Holland

Just saw Civil War. Tom Holland nailed it, both Spider-Man AND Peter Parker. Stole the movie, in fact.
He has a very likeable onscreen presence - perfect casting, and based on this film alone by far the best guy ever to portray the iconic wallcrawler.

I've only seen 3 scenes and i've noticed his British accent in 1. My friend told me that you only hear it 3 times if you pay attention if you don't you won't hear it and the CGI in the movie is very different than the trailers and looks way more expensive, is it true? And 1 of the fight scenes takes around 10 minutes, true?

I didn't really pick up on his British accent, but then again I wasn't exactly focusing on it either. Peter Parker is supposed to be from Queens, so I'm not entirely sure if he portrayed an accurate Queens/NY accent either. Let's just say that he sounded US to me, certainly not UK.
As to the CGI, it is pretty great throughout the film. There's quite a lot of action/fight scenes in the film, and the one with Spider-Man is a good 10-15 mins long.
Personally I grew up reading Spider-Man comics, and never felt that his character was done 100% right before. Tobey made a sympathetic (though some might say overtly sentimental) Peter Parker, but his Spidey was too low on humour. Garfield just felt obnoxious and nothing like the Peter Parker I grew up reading in the 80's.
Holland's portrayal seems to nail both aspects: his Spider-Man is fun and his Parker feels unassuming and good natured. Somehow he reminded me of Michael J. Fox in the BTTF films (that's a compliment btw).
I hope his stand-alone film works out well, because this Spider-Man deserves it.

Great! Can't wait to see it. While, I liked the previous actors I feel really good about what's coming. He just may be the one to set the standard?

He nails everything. Socially awkward, but not nerdy like Tobey. Fun loving, but they did away with the cockiness and forced humor of Garfield's portrayal. Charismatic, lovable, and a naturalI cannot wait for the solo film (and hot Aunt May).

Sounds good. I think Garfield and Maguire each were good in their own way but hopefully Holland will be the one to put it all together. Spider-man is my favorite character and he needs some stability that lasts. Can't wait to see Civil War and Homecoming.

Such a relief. Garfield had me hating on Spider-Man movies, I couldn't stand watching him bully villains. It's so nice to see Holland show up, have a sense of humor, & make everyone's favorite hero look like a jerk.
                He did a great job.

There seems to be a huge contradiction there. So it's not cool to bully villains, but it's cool to make spider-man look like a jerk? People throw out bs excuses for not liking something.

used to read a lot of spidey comics in the 80s and early 90s, so heh i guess that does mean i'm a fanboy.
nice to see my childhood hero translated well onscreen, that's all. stole the movie for me at least 🙂
