New York City Council member Chi Ossé filed paperwork Monday to run against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) for his Brooklyn-based congressional seat.
"The Democratic Party's leadership is not only failing to effectively fight back against Donald Trump, they have also failed to deliver a vision that we can all believe in," Ossé, who recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America, said in a statement to Axios.
"These failures are some of the many reasons why I am currently exploring a potential run for New York's 8th Congressional District."
Ossé, 27, is an ally of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and is known as a left wing voice in the New York City council.
Axios was first to report that Ossé was considering a bid against Jeffries.
Ossé filed with the Federal Election Commission on Monday to run in the Democratic primary for New York's 8th district, which covers parts of South and East Brooklyn.
His team also set up an Act Blue page for him to begin fundraising for his run.
A Jeffries campaign spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Asked by Axios in October about a possible primary challenge from Ossé, Jeffries replied, "If you ask me a serious question, I'll give you a serious answer. And you know that's not a serious question based on everything coming out of Brooklyn."
Asked again last week if he had a comment on reports by the New York Times and New York Post that Ossé was planning to run, Jeffries responded simply: "No."
Ossé's run would be part of a broader nationwide effort by younger and more progressive Democrats to oust incumbents they see as too old school or establishment oriented.
Many of those insurgent candidates declined to commit to voting for Jeffries as leader or speaker — or outright said they would not do so — in interviews with Axios earlier this year.
Democratic Tea Party wave incoming!
This should have happened at least a decade ago!

His constituents just voted for Mamdani for mayor and against the old guard (Cuomo) in both the primary and the general. I agree. Elected Democrats, in general, ****ing suck. It seems that many of their voters are getting on the same page.

Simple, knocking off status quo dinosaurs like the GOP Tea Party did. Excite the base and turn out new voters rather than having a platform even Dick Cheney could vote for. Republicans tried the milquetoast **** with McCain and Romney. They eventually won by moving away from the center. It's time for Democrats to do the same.
As for policy, if I'm in charge of crafting a platform, most of it can be summed up in FDR's final state of the union address, which I'll quote a portion of below. But add to it a focus on regulating AI and data center construction, prosecuting pedophiles and corporate criminals, ending all corporate welfare and subsidies, enforcement of existing anti-trust legislation, bringing taxes on the wealthiest Americans back to historical levels, strengthening labor unions, re-examining every trade deal since NAFTA, and, most importantly, vowing to not accept corporate PAC money and vowing that the overturning of Citizens United will be a litmus test for any future Supreme Court pick in the same way that Roe v. Wade was for Republicans.
In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed.
Among these are:
The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;
The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
The right of every family to a decent home;
The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
The right to a good education.
All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.
