I remember it being a great film, but is it just me, or is Deborah Kerr totally hamming it up? I guess that's the way acting was in those days… Not subtle at all.

Well, her character was possibly suffering from sexual hysteria or she did in fact see those two dark ghosts, so I think taking that into consideration, Kerr did not overact. Personally, I loved her in the movie.

Kerr is one of my favourite actresses but she did ham it up from time to time. Here, I don't think she was hammy at all - her acting was appropriate for the character - a wonderful performance. One only needs to look as far as Separate Tables to see her mugging to insufferable effect.

When I was in college, the original novel The Innocents is based on, The Turn of the Screw , was part of one of my English modules.

There is a great difference between over acting and bravura acting.
Over acting is acting done badly; bravura acting is acting with larger than life style.
Every new generation of movie fans accuses the previous generation of "ham," without taking into account that styles are constantly changing and that much of the acting of today will look dated by the next generation to come.
Enjoy each for what it is, a product of its time. After all, modern screen acting evolved from those "over acting hams" of the past. We wouldn't have Daniel Day Lewis and Russell Crowe today if we did not have Brando and Dean yesterday.
And This, Too, Shall Pass Away

It's something that stays with you for a long time. I assume that was the intent.
                        The Turning Of The Screw.
You wonder if this was all in her imagination, or if there was something supernatural going on!

One of the most beautiful black and white movies I've ever seen. It's gorgeous and an eerie feeling of dread just permeates the whole movie.
So many stories, so little time.
