What's the worst special effect you've ever seen?

Yes.
But since the board is asking for one particular example, I would have to say the dinosaur stampede in Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. It was so bad, I mentally checked out of the rest of the movie and have hated it ever since. -

The CGI they used to remove Henry Cavill's mustache in Justice League.

Well, I’ve got a doozy for you. This is from the 1986 film, Deadly Friend, with Kristy Swanson, and the kid that played Albert Ingalls in Little House. This is literally the worst special effect that I’ve ever seen in a film. You can even see Kristy Swanson struggling to hold back her laughter, after she throws the basketball at the head of the old lady that was in Throw Mama From the Train.

The old lady started standing there screaming before Kristy even picked up the ball.

For some reason, I didn’t get your notification. This site can be buggy at times.
But yes, it’s just plain awful. We’re talking 1950’s sci fi rocketship, with visible support strings, and candle wick rocket exhaust, awful

That makeup effect is hilarious!
Its the 'R' rated cut of the kill. I have on dvd and the unrated version goes on for a bit longer and looks fake as. Sometimes less is more.

Oh my. It went on far too long as it was
I’ll have to look for the alternative ending.
The infamous 'basketball' scene in which Samantha kills Elvira with a basketball is extended to show more of Elvira's head exploding all over the wall and her headless body walking directly from the wall instead of cutting back to Samantha's face and then showing the body walking around as in the VHS release.

In the unrated dvd, there is also a longer sequence of the dream sequence where Samantha stabs a broken glass vase into her fathers chest. There is a lot more blood squirting out.
You can watch the unrated cut on here.

Thanks. I’m pretty sure that I did watch it from this site, so that must be the version that I saw. I even commented on the Deadly Friend page, about the basketball death scene, that I forgot all about

Most definitely!

If nothing else, Ed Wood was economical!
You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.

I just thought of this one..
And I dunno if it is out there but there are these helicopter explosions that also come to mind where they animate fire around them to make them look like they blew up.
I think Black Sunday has one of those. -

The Entity - 82'
is quite an effective and creepy supernatural thriller for the most part and boasts a terrific central performance from Barbara Hershey and doesn't rely on big effects to generate its shocks and scares.
The climax visual effects
trapping the entity into a optically imposed demonic iceberg
were not par for the course though. Not after comparison to the quality and top-notch for its time optical fx for
Poltergeist
around the same time.
