If the writers aren't complete morons this is probably going to be how Stefan dies. Remember, we didn't find out about Katherine after Silas drained her until I think a couple of episodes later. It also took a few episodes before she finally aged/died also.
ETA:
This is also probably why those spoiler pictures showed Stefan and Caroline's wedding happening in March. They'll likely tie the knot ASAP to live out their last days as husband and wife before Stefan croaks.

I can understand them wanting to give Elena a normal life, but it didn't make sense to do it on a whim.
I don't think Kai's curse was specific to non Vampires, not to mention the fact that their entire group seems to always be in danger, so for them to choose to cure her on a whim after years of nonstop threats against them was a little premature.

Admittedly, I always thought how stupid it was that in season 2 John sacrificed his life for Elena so she'll have a chance to have a child - then 1 year later she pisses all over his noble sacrifice and becomes a vampire.
However, I can't stand it when people (characters in the show or real life fans) keep saying how bad it is to be a vampire -
In this show, vampires have 0(!) negative consequences for being vampires. They don't even mind walking in sunlight.
If you give me the chance to be immortal and forever look like an A&E model while also having super powers? I'd take it in a heart bit!
This whole thing about putting innocent lives in danger is dumb. They don't really have to kill. People will donate blood willingly.
And as for their general trouble of the week, that happens anyway. Elena was a target long before she became a vampire.
In this particular universe? Being a vampire is wonderful.
The fact that all of the characters on this show being mass murderers is because of their stupid decisions.
