Kai is the villain. Klaus is not a villain anymore. Klaus bark is worse than his bite whereas Kai is a real evil guy IMO.
Klaus is def a better written character.

Kai. I think JoMo did a great job as Klaus but after the first season he was on, he lost his bite and I did think he seemed pathetic. He just didn't have compelling motivation for anything.
Chris's portrayal of Kai was just awesome. It reminded me of Patrick Bateman at times. He managed to be snarky, scary (and hot af). -

Kai,Klaus cant isnt even a good good guy. He's not likable whatsoever in any aspect and his reasoning is a whiny given all hes gained. Kai on the otherhand is charismatic and you can kind of hope he can be redeemed. Yes he killed his family but you gotta admit that coven and their one twin must die rule was kind of harsh especially with kai having no actual magic to defend himself against Joe. Call me bias but I wanted him to turn good and shipped him and Bonnie lol.

Kai was a good villian, but could never hold my interest for 4-5 seasons like Klaus and his family have. Klaus never had time to get over his mommy/daddy issues since they tortured him for 1000 years until recently. Klaus and Katherine were the first villians that had a sad back story, now they give a sad story to everyone.

Kai. Less whiny and tormented. He's evil simply because he gives 0 f-cks. Period. And that's delightful to watch.
Klaus basically just has mommy and daddy issues. He not about that life.

The best thing about Kai is that he too had fam issues, considering the whole coven rule about one one witch survives or whatever. But he didn't make spend his time moaning about that and justifying his behavior by blaming it on his parentswhich is what Klaus was all about.

There's a deleted scene for 6x15 with Kai and Jo where he basically goes into a whiny rant about being "the blacksheep of the family."
Honestly, I'm glad they deleted it. Nothing against Chris Wood, because he acted his ass off in that scene, but that trope has been done to DEATH on this show. I'm beyond sick of it.
Oh he kills things because his family rejected him? Tell him to take a number. Removing that scene actually made Kai stand out more as a villain, to me.
Even Katherine's backstory is better. She had her newborn ripped from her arms, was nearly sacrificed and then had her entire family murdered when she tried to run. Her reasons for going psycho and being hardened were more sympathetic to me.
Everyone else, I just feel needs to get over it already.
