Based on your liked list, maybe you've seen them already but anyways:
The Americans (I can't recommend this enough.)
    Narcos
    House of Cards
    The Bridge (DEN/SWE version.)
Sherlock (doesn't really relate to your list per se, but I just love it.)
    Six Feet Under
Do you even know what honor is?

The OP and I don't have the same taste, really, though some of the shows he listed are just really great shows, but yeah, "The Americans" is probably the way to go. Good call.

Big thank you for the replies so far, looks like The Americans is going into the pool of contenders very early on
Narcos is another for me to consider as have seen mention about that from other sources too
Yes have seen all seasons of The Bridge, and have watched ALL of the other nordic/scandi shows
Sherlock, i just can't go there, i think i know the type of thing it's going to be, the style, and feel, and i wouldn't like it
this is a generalization and maybe silly to say, but being English myself, i tend to like the escapism of watching foreign TV shows, not British stuff 🙂
        please keep the suggestions coming!
edited the OP, forgot to include underbelly in the liked section

          @lbalb9

          • looks very promising, thanks for the suggestion!
Guys, regarding Dexter, i will bear that in mind, nice one for pointing out the best seasons too, although i must admit if i watch a show, i watch every second, never skip, but point taken.
            @Blue_Leaf
          • WOW! - i looked up each and every one of those suggestions, and most i had never heard of, and some looked right up my alley, so a BIG thank you for that list, and your time posting.
going to cherry-pick from all these suggestions and update the contenders section once more

Would recommend Dexter if you haven't watched it already.

I just want to add if you do watch DEXTER I would highly recommend seasons 1, 2 & 4. Seasons 5 & 6 were adequate, but stay away from the ridiculous seasons 3, 7 & 8.

Here are a few of my favorites:
BLACK MIRROR (2011): season three begins streaming on Netflix on Friday, October 21st. This gives you plenty of time to catch up with mini-seasons one and two and the incredible Christmas Special
BORGEN (2010): If you are into "nordic noirs" this political drama from Denmark is at the top of the list.
CONTINUUM (2012): If you enjoy futuristic science fiction. It is a great Canadian series.
FARGO (2014): Whether you liked the original film or not both season of this television remake are worth your while.
THE LEFTOVERS (2014): This show you have to watch to understand and appreciate. It is a genre all its own
MAD MEN (2007): My favorite series of the 21st century, so far
MASTER OF NONE (2015): A great, well-written and relevant series created and starring Aziz Ansari.
PENNY DREADFUL (2014): Its three seasons have some of the best acting and storytelling around, especially if you are into gothic horror. I became obsessed and have now binge-watched it five times.
RECTIFY(2013): Another show that is easy to binge-watch and is fresh with a stellar cast. Season four begins Wednesday, October 26th.
TRUE DETECTIVE (2014): Season one only. Season two destroyed this anthology series completely.
If you have any questions regarding these suggestions feel free to ask. I actually have plenty more favorites, but these are at the top of my list.

                      Hey vapor8,
Have you ever tried watching the Canadian futuristic series CONTINUUM? After reading you list of TOP SERIES I thought you might enjoy it.

                        Hey blue leaf,
Yes, I've checked it out. My favorite Canadian tv series is Wonderfalls.

thanks for all the great suggestions!
                          have chose to watch
                          mad men
                          and
                          narcos
as my first two off the list
i like to watch two shows in tandem, so am three episodes in on each one
i like narcos a great deal, and to some extent mad men too, however i worry that the scope of the story in mad men will stay relatively insular and "small" but will plod on due to the fact that is so highly ranked, am assuming it branches out etc
but feel free to mention any others as per my original post as i will soon be done with those on the contention list and will be greedy for more 🙂

I would like to put my pacifier in Adeles binky box!
