So, Rick has been a hero who basically gets nothing but brutal pain and suffering for all he does, except the birth of his girls, where does he come from, and more importantly, why is he so important to the story of this town and these people.
He continually takes up the gauntlet for the "orphans " of Mystic Falls, is he their guardian angel or something else?
We're all on our way out, act accordingly. -

In all this time, we actually don't know all that much about Ric! We know he's from Boston and went to Duke where he met Isabel. We know his family were German immigrants who moved to Texas in the mid 1700s.
Other than being married to Isobel though, I can't recall any other explanation for his immersion in the supernatural. She was how he was introduced to it, and everything else "happened" to him (like due to the Gilbert ring, or from his friendship with vampires). Unlike most of the others, like Elena being born the doppelgnger and Jeremy being born a hunter, and so on. He kind of fell into it, lol.
Hot guys + dark subject matter + plenty of violence = watchable television. -

Ric was my favorite character, hands down, in Seasons 1-3. Even seeing him come back a few times in Season 4 made me giddy. I'm happy he's back "for good" now, but they totally dropped the ball on developing him any more since his return. And that's a shame because he was one of the most interesting characters early on.
