I have both and the heat pump is immensely efficient
the heat pump heats the home during cold days, but when it's too cold outside for the heat pump to work efficiently, the furnace takes over
the only problem is that it isn't able to keep the entire upstairs cool during warmer days so I have a portable window A/C unit for one of the rooms upstairs
that being said, it's worth the small inconvenience to save on energy usage

heat pumps have the lowest carbon footprint of any heating or cooling system

that's why you have a dual fuel system like I've said a dozen times. you switch over to your furnace when it's too cold for the pump to work efficiently
the pump doesn't crap out sooner than a furnace. having the heat pump will extend the life of your furnace and A/C by massive amounts while paying for itself.
the only reason to resist heat pumps is if you're either retarded, a poor person, or an oil barron
