It's a thriller, and a bit of a change of pace for a director who made his name directing '50s sci-fi and a cast famous for TV westerns and medical shows.

First name that comes to mind when someone says 50s sci-fi is Roger Corman, but he is also famous for horrors with Vincent Price, so it's probably not him. Jack Arnold maybe ?

Not Corman, but the director was associated with AIP and had a career that spanned decades, directing as recently as 2015.
