    Sure, there are survivors and life goes on but it really is not a very happy ending for the survivors.
    They usually will have others they know and love that they lost and they will be missing and grieving for them.
    The world will have changed. Perhaps even making it either impossible or even uninhabitable for a lot of places.
    Life is going to be a hell of a lot different than what they knew and were used to.
    One of the few movies I know of that does show a sad or thoughtful ending with survivors would be Terminator 3.
    The nukes go off and the grim domination of the machines start.

      Anyway the last doomsday flick I've personally enjoyed was "
      The Day the Earth Caught Fire"
      .
