I remembered really liked it but I hadn't seen it in many years. A couple weeks ago, I came across it on tv, watched some of it, remembered how good it is and pulled it out for a rewatch. Really good movie; it's only real shortcomings are some '80s claptrap. Lance Henricksen is really good in it too. There have been at least 3 sequels, and Henricksen came back for at least one of them but I haven't seen any of them.

all the stories are of the highest quality in every way special and makeup effects, stories, characters, acting, the intrigue and magical atmosphere creating this magical feeling and illusions are the main reasons why this film is so palpable and so extraordinary and better than 99% of all horror movies.
everything, all the characters, and makeup effects and aura of the backgrounds, environments make you fully immerse yourself in the monster worlds. the environments make you believe 100% that what you are watching is real.
it was made back when horror movies actually made realities and worlds real. imagine that.
they almost never take the time to create real worlds i horror movies anymore and ever since the '00s started. ever notice hat about modern horror movies? the magic, allure and believability in horror monies is gone nowadays.
i love the makeup and special effects in the wolf character. it has the most realistic transformation scene ever made.
the majesty and magic of the part where the girl in the vampire story's body i in the wax museum after getting killed is so magical. it really looks like she is a part of that world now.
i love the mummy story. i love the sex slave harlot story. it's very edgy and arousing when she gets off sexually from being whipped. that idea always intrigued me as a kid, a girl, getting sexual pleasure from being whipped.
the premise of modern characters living in a few of the iconic movie monsters' worlds by crossing the velvet ropes in a wax museum and wearing clothes of those times in those ancient worlds and after getting killed they end up a wax figure in that same museum is one of the most original ideas ever put on film.
i love how it always feels real whenever a character goes into one of the monster worlds bc of the special effect.
i never understood why it's called a horror comedy though bc i never got that much comedy from it.
the integrity of this film is where i'd like to be in a serious mood and style of watching this film so i can get into the magical aspects of this film.
this is one of the most original, unique, and one of the best horror films ever made.

first of all i have to say you are the only person on this website who has ever talked to me about this movie in this adoring and loving way.
it sounds like this is your favorite movie too like me. is this your favorite movie? and i just thought, this being a very obscure cultish cult movie do all the people who talk about it love it?
bc maybe that is what it is a very rare movie in it's status and it being a movie that is so obscure and barely ever talked about or known of that whenever anyone talks about it they love it. could that be true? this is the first time i've ever thought about this kind of movie. which could make it even more special and special to me.
i love the part after she was bitten on the neck by the vampire and is a wax figure they fleck pieces of her cheek off with an instrument which proves she is made of wax. that is so magical to me. this idea of a person going from being flesh and blood to becoming a wax figure.
the whole film is perfectly authentic. you know what i mean? they made everything perfect in the suspension of disbelief of you believing by going over the velvet ropes of a wax museum you can go into the historic world of a famous movie monster and you have their style of dress of that period and that you become a wax figure after getting killed by them.
that final battle at the end with the famous movie monsters and the wax bucket is so epically awesome though i noticed recently it drags. i love the ode to night of the living dead in the black and white segment, making it appropriate with the b&w photography.
i just think that other than a few funny lines and the main guy who becomes a werewolf the movie isn't a horror comedy. it is mostly a serious toned horror movie that feels very gothic mostly.
bc in order to pull of the main tone it had to be mostly serious. and had it been a horror comedy it wouldn't have worked anywhere near as well bc it wouldn't have pulled you in, made you believe in the wax museum and the other magical thing about this film. you know what i mean by that?
by the way there is an error in this movie. and it's blatantly obvious. it's the part where the guy who is playing a wax figure moves his body. and i'm talking a full twitch of his body. know the part i'm talking about?
interesting you bring up marquis de sade bc when i first watched this movie i was only about 12 years old, back in 1990. so i didn't know who he was then. years later i found out about him from watching a movie called night terrors bc marquis de sade is the main character in it played by robert englund.
then i found out about a movie called salo: or 120 days of sodom. a movie based on the writings of sade. then i watched a movie about his writings and him called marat/sade from 1967. it's a sort of play what if movie, i guess.
i first found about waxwork from watching this is horror a behind the scenes horror movie show that was on MTV oddly in 1990. i was so enthralled by the clips they showed of this movie that i had to watch it.
this show this is horror do you remember it? it still is the best horror movie show which shows behind the scenes working on scenes of horror movies and has horror movie makers talking about their horror movies and others that i've ever watched. it was dvd behind the scenes extras before dvd.
but it was better than a movie dvd extra bc they showed stars of like the nightmare on elm street series like rachel talalay talking about making the films they just made a couple years ago while on the set.
so you get this insider view of how they made the special effects on the a nightmare on elm street series. and you got to se sam raimi on the set of evil dead 2 in the woods by his cabin in the film talking about being inspired to make the evil dead from watching the last house on the left. these are the amazing and magical things you'd watch on this show.
did you know the director of waxwork anthony hickox is in the marquis de sade story when the marquis de sade whips the girl? now i just found out hickox is good friends with zach galligan who starred as the main character in waxwork. that is so awesome and means so much to me! it is after all zach's best movie so he should be close friends with anthony.
sadly the sequel sucks. the only really good thing about it is drew barrymore's small and hot appearance in her hot and see thru nightgown and bruce campbell's character and performance.

you didn't answer these questions: did you watch this is horror on MTV back in 1990?
also how did you ever come across this obscure movie called waxwork?
also do you understand how if this movie were a horror comedy it wouldn't work bc it wouldn't be believable in the magical parts? also it wouldn't work in that if it were both a serious horror and a comedy horror bc you have to be one or the other.
were you fully transported to the magical monster worlds and fully believe the magical crossing of the ropes into their worlds and every other magical pat of this film?
also i have to point out that the casting of my beloved patrick macnee is so special to me but only after i knew him from the avengers after watching it for the first time about 20 years ago.
the sequel was the biggest disappointment ever bc it was so bad in every way it was so bad b movie. i can't remember any part of the story or scenes that i liked a lot except bruce campbell's character. all the magic of the original is not in the sequel it's a hollow and substandard movie.

no, i asked if you ever watched this is horror the documentary behind the scenes and interviews with horror movie makers tv show on MTV back in 1990. so did you ever watch this show?
me too i watched it in 1990. so awesome that we actually watched it for the first time at the same time! that's so special to me. i would like to find out how people came across this movie the first time bc for one i've only seen it being show on tv one time about 10 years ago.
i remember there being 2 different video box covers. the cooler one of course is not on the dvd cover. for some reason they always don't put the same cover of the vhs of horror movies from the '80s on the dvd covers and blu ray covers. which is wrong bc the old vhs covers are always 100 times better than the cheap looking, non artistic covers of dvds and blu rays.
so the cooler one i saw at the library one time. it has a vampire abut the bite a girl in a dress on the cover and it's all serious and brooding looking. and the kind of dumb one they put on the dvd with the dumb tagline more fun than a barrel of mummies. which is not funny and dumb.
i love how you said spellbinder with kelly preston. i watched this movie only bc in my bare facts video guide book it says she shows her tits thru her see thru shirt in bed.
it's a bad movie, boring and just bad in every way almost. i will always love tim daly bc of wings and her costar crystal bernard like many actors got her start in a slasher movie called slumber party massacre 2. which is quite enjoyable. that is a movie that i need to re-watch soon. have you ever watched this movie?
the magic of being 10, 11, 12 or teens and watching movies on video back in the late '80s and '90s bc your sister or friend rented it on vhs tape is one of my fondest memories of my life.
i remember watching movies with my sister's friends on vhs. they say you should grow up every person should but if your best times in your life were when you were 12 or younger then why not relive those times your whole life? and why live in your sad depressed current life?
the majesty and epicness of this experience i will always fondly look back on. something really special even today about sitting down and watching a horror movie or any movie on vhs tape on my vcr and listening to the static sounds and watching the grainy video of the movie.
i have a new tradition and it is sitting down and watching silent night, deadly night on my vcr every christmas that i started last year.
ok this is really cool and special to me bc you brought up return of the living dead movies and dana ashbrook who is in return of the living dead 2. have you ever watched it?
i love him in waxwork. he's so lovable and funny and cool.
i love how magical the mummy story is. it has this great atmosphere and tomb and action special effects and a great believable set.
the part that is really respectable to me being a hardcore horror movie fan is the part in the vampire story where a guy is laying down with his leg halfway eaten off.
it always struck me as powerful when i was a kid of 12 bc it looks so gruesome and realistic and it still looks gruesome and just a realistic now, me being an adult as then and it's still gruesome to me also. it's an image and idea that i've never seen in any other movie except massacre in dinosaur valley. so it gets respect for being original.
