i've decided to switch my (seldom-used) home office and my movie room around, since the former is larger.
the old movie room had been a hodgepodge of homemade and store-bought shelves, some designed to hold movies, some repurposed as such. ultimately it had become so unwieldyshelves atop shelvesthat it was becoming difficult to even move, much less find anything.
so, i've decided to eschew the set up that i had and make some purpose-built shelves to line the walls of the other room. i will readily admit, i have positively no carpentry skills whatsoever. this is just a starta work in progressand it started with a lot of trial-and-error. it might not look like much, but it is sturdy as hell and just this one section holds about 1,200 dvds.
the entire thing is made out of 1"x6" pine boards of varying lengths, grey bricks (which i refer to as cinderbricks), and metal corner braces. the braces are screwed (on the left) onto the doorframe, except for the shelf that goes over the door, which is screwed into the wall. on the right side, the shelves are screwed together where they meet at a perpendicular angle.
it's not shown in the photos, but the next wall on the agenda has a closet door which i'll have the shelves go along either side and arch over. that should hold probably another 400 or so dvds. after that is a just a long, straight wall (about 18', i think) which will hold more dvds, vhs, etc.
