I love it in spite of Keanu. Winona was fine. Gorgeous film that really transports you.

I like Keanu and Winona both in general and in this.
But unfortunately Coppola allowed some laughably bad line deliveries and accents from both.
They were good/okay at times, more than half the time.
Coppola needed some good looking faces to help sell it - his studio Zoetrope was doing poorly financially after too many financial failure passion projects in the '80s.

Saw this when it came out in theaters - it was a fine, gothic tale - not perfect by any means, but yes, it did transport you, and, it found a great balance of making vampires romantic, tragic, and yes, scary!
the imagery, cinematography were top notch, and except for Keanu, a very underrated cast - Winona's acting gets better with each viewing - sometimes Victorian innocence can come across as staged - but, people really did act and interact that way

I generally don't have a problem with that kind of miscasting in that kind of Hollywood film with those kinds of stars.
Keanu bad lines are also some of the most fun to quote, I don't think I'd want that movie without stuff like "Bloody
          wolves
          in the
          night
". It's also a Winona Ryder vehicle, the movie doesn't happen without her, she's the one that brought the film to Coppola.

I had really high hopes when it came out, but saw it and thought it was terrible.

well yeah, but they also make up the majority of screen time so it's hard not to comment without bringing up the usual suspects, but since you have I won't, nuff is said, although I also have to add Cary Elwes, whom I thought was also terribley miscast.
I agree with about the imagry and it had some nice fx. It's overly melodramtic at times but it's a fair movie I suppose.

It looks great and Sadie Frost is just yum. I do like Winona Rider in this, and, admittedly, I thought Oldman was fun when sizing up Reeves early on. The vampire brides and even Oldman in werewolf form. However, as much as I might find the shadow of Dracula going after Keanu gnarly, I never felt passion for the genre in the direction by Coppola. It's surface beauty in that Grand Hollywood Machine sort of way. But it is easy on the eyes, even if the romanticism kind of is laid on a bit thick.

I like the look of the film but I always thought it was rather boring. I probably should see it again though.

I just don't like this movie.
Keanu Reeves is flat out awful and Winona isn't much better. I really like Gary Oldman as an actor but I just didn't like the conception of Dracula in this film. It's odd to me that a movie called "Bram Stoker's Dracula" would come off more as an adaptation of other versions of Dracula as a tortured, romantic monster. Nosferatu isn't a movie I love either, but it is much more faithful to Stoker's novel.

Worse than Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I found it visually offensive. Francis Ford Coppola went way too far over the top with it. Winona Ryder was dreadful.

I love the visuals: the set design, costume design, cinematography and special effects are solid. I also love the music.
I find the rest of the movie a bit of a mess unfortunately: the script isn't that great, some of the casting is quite bad imo and some of the performances are too hammy. There's good ham and bad ham, I think Hopkins and Oldman are bad ham in this film.

                                    Yep, great score.
And I like the whispering and voices that come in the background at certain moments, such as Dracula first speaking with Jonathan, or Lucy crawling back into her coffin before her decapitation.

Art direction and ambiance in the film has really grown on me, but that SCORE.Kilar's masterpiece, even if he only gave them around 20-30 minutes of compositions and the entire score is just variations (and 2 themes are missing from the release) of that.
I like it for what it is, but Dracula could lose the mustache.
