I am looking forward to watching "Winner Take All" and I'll write about it here when I do. I just wrote more about "A Sensitive Passionate Man" on the Angie Dickinson thread.
Yesterday I watched the TV movie "White Mama" (1980) with Bette Davis and Eileen Heckart. In it, Bette plays an inner-city woman who takes in a black teenage boy as a foster child, so that she can collect the money that goes with fostering a child. Half way through the movie she is evicted from her apartment and the boy leaves her. Now homeless, bag lady Eileen Heckart teaches Bette about life on the streets.
I always thought Bette was one of those stars that remained popular to this day. That's why I'm so surprised that this movie (in which Bette's the lone star, and is on screen 100% of the time) has fallen into such obscurity. Her fans obsess about her theatrical movies, but I'll bet none of the Bette Davis fans have seen this movie- just because it's made-for-TV Sad.

Actually, there was a discussion on Bette's board a year or so ago (long since vanished) about this very film and it was very fondly recalled. I believe she received an Emmy nomination for Best Actress.
Bette's tv movies are pretty popular with her fans but of course they prefer the vintage classic films. Still, quite a few of Bette's tv movies have been released on dvd and vhs keeping them alive.

I've been watching a lot of tv movies lately. Last night, I watched Our Guys: Outrage at Glen Ridge, the night before I watched Maid of Honor starring the very beautiful and underrated Linda Purl.
In recent weeks, I've also watched:
        Face of Evil
        Sisters and Other Strangers
At the Mercy of a Stranger
        Her Deadly Rival
        Nightmare
The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story

Midwest Obsession and Lethal Vows are two of my favorites. I have Midwest Obsession on DVD and I can't get enough of Lethal Vows because John Ritter is one of my favorite actors. I also enjoy Gary Cole, so I'm jealous that you got to see him in some things that I haven't yet.

A friend of mine in the UK sent me FATAL VISION a couple of years ago, Gary Cole (a very young one) gives a great performance as Dr Jeffrey MacDonald, and Karl Malden and Eva Marie Saint are also great as Collette's (MacDonald's wife) parents Freddy and Mildred Kassab, the book by Joel McGuiness was riveting as well. I have the other Gary Cole movies on DVD (bought from America) so you should be able to pick them up quite cheaply. I just ordered the TV series from 1995 AMERICAN GOTHIC loved Gary in that, a pity it didn't run for very long, I remember dropping everything to sit and watch it. Re: MIDWEST OBSESSION it's also a favorite of mine, couldn't stand the dairy princess character, what a nut case, poor Beth, I thought Beth's boyfriend was a little too soft with the psycho, too much the nice guy, I would have let her jump off that tower! (whatever) I'm in a true crime mini-series mood at the moment, so will be watching DEAD BY SUNSET tonight, followed by MURDER ORDAINED (love Keith Carradine in that one)

I love the true crime movies, too. I've seen some good ones, both regular tv movies and miniseries. A good one I like is called Innocent Victims, based on the book of the same name. John Corbett and Rick Shroeder star in that one.

I haven't seen Innocent Victims, but it looks interesting. have just finished watching LOVE AND HATE 2 part (A Canadian Tragedy) with Kate Nelligan and Kenneth Welsh. The story of Joanne and Colin Thatcher. Another good one, with Peter Coyote and Treat Williams is ECHOES IN THE DARKNESS 2 part (the killing of Susan Reinhart
based on Joseph Wambaugh's book about the case. if you haven't seen them they are worth checking out.

There's a Canadian tv movie I like that Kate Nelligan (who is Canadian) costars in called Liar, Liar: Between Father and Daughter, which is about incest. I don't believe it's based on a true story, but I could be wrong. It's enjoyable nonetheless. Nelligan plays a lawyer.

I remember seeing that one a few years ago, it was on very late at night, quite a good movie.I like Kate Nelligan too, do you remember MILLION DOLLAR BABIES (about the Dione Quintuplets)If I remember rightly, isn't John Ritter in that one. It's years since I've seen it, so I could be wrong. You are right Re: LIAR LIAR it's not based on a true story, but pretty compelling just the same. There are probably real cases like that though. One I found very hard to watch (true story) was also from Canada THE BOYS OF SAINT VINCENTS, 2 part
That one actually left me feeling very disturbed for days afterwards. At the moment over here, there is an investigation going on about alleged child abuse in children's homes run by the churches, dating back to the 50s and 60s A lot of the victims are still waiting for answers and explanations. Those so-called "do-gooders" have a lot to answer for.

I've heard of Million Dollar Babies and I read an article about the Dionne Quintuplets once. I did some checking and Beau Bridges costarred in that one. It's interesting that you mention John Ritter. He joked about resembling Beau Bridges on the DVD commentary for the tv miniseries Stephen King's It. I've heard of but not seen The Boys of St. Vincents. A good Canadian actor that I enjoy, Henry Czerny, is in that one. He's in some good tv movies, such as Range of Motion (2000) and The Pact (2002).

I can't remember the name of it but it was on True Movies, it had Patricia Routledge playing this woman accused of killing her elderly aunt.

                                MyMovieTVRomance — 13 years ago(February 18, 2013 12:15 AM)

How I miss the heyday of TV movies of the week, with the likes of Morgan Fairchild and Heather Locklear.
Me too! I was too young to appreciate them back in the early 1990s. But, by the late 90s, there was something called something like "The Afternoon Movie" on UPN and a similar showing on other local channels, which we picked up on our old antenna. And, from there, I saw old 1970s and 1980s movies (the likes of which I haven't seen any channel shows anymore!), like "Mommie Dearest", "Burnt Offerings", and a TV-movie with Bette Davis that I saw parts of and up until a few days ago, I thought I must be exagerating my own memories, I thought maybe I never saw an aged Bette Davis in an air-plane movie after all.
But, since becoming interested again in old TV movies, thanks to youtube, I now know that I was not imagining it. Turns out that the movie I was thinking of was called "Skyward", cause I read the description on IMDb, and that's gotta be it! But, now that there are almost 100 channels readily available to people even without satellite, and because all the channels have become pretty niche now, there are no old-fashioned channels with an afternoon matinee programing block, an old sitcom here and there, news, and some new stuffThose old channels were a great mixed bag. And, there is no channel that I know of anymore that plays old 1970s TV moviesor any afternoon block of old movies. And, I love how after every commercial break, an announcer would say something like "We now return to the UPN afternoon movie". That used to be like that on lots of channels, but not anymore. As I said, I was too young to appreciate it back then (I didn't even know that Bette Davis was a super-star grand dame, I just knew I liked that lady, whoever she was), but I sure do miss it now!
If we want to see those now, we have to buy them. TV channels are so niche now, that they're boring!
Do the major networks still even make TV movies?
I've been wondering that myself, and I am slowly coming to the realization that the major network TV movie (ABC, NBC, CBS) is maybe a thing of the past. The MOVIE-OF-THE-WEEK doesn't exist anymore, nor have I seen HALLMARK-HALL-OF-FAME lately.
It seems that the only way to see a TV-movie now is on a cable network, like Hallmark Channel, ABC Family, or Lifetime. But, there is admittedly a difference in quality. Or, maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but I like the old ones from the 70s and 80s from network TV the best, with a few latter-day exceptions, maybe.

How did you see that old TV-movie? Old TV movies from the 1970s and 80s usually aren't shown on TV anymore, sadly.
Did you see it on YouTube? That's how I've been watching some old ones, though I hate that I have to resort to watching them on the daggon' computer now, just because TV has become so niche now that they won't show that old stuff anymore. We either have to watch them on the computer, or, if we're lucky, buy them (neither of which is as fun as watching it on regular TV. Cause there's just something kinda special about catching an old, rarely-seen movie on regular TV, don't you think?).
The last MFTVMs I watched were "STRANGERS: THE STORY OF A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER" (1979) and "A TASTE OF EVIL" (1971), both of which, I finished yesterday and today, respectively.
