Outstanding TV dramatization of George Washington's perilous Christmas gamble of crossing the Delaware River and attacking the Hessian forces at Trenton. Despite their own fatigue and the winter weather, Washington manages to lift his weary soldiers' spirits, allowing the army to cross the river on the night of December 25th 1776. The crossing is done in one night, allowing the troops to attack Trenton at eight o' clock in the morning on December 26, 1776, and achieve a stunning victory, capturing almost all the Hessian garrison.
You can watch the full movie on YouTube:
While there are some historical inaccuracies, overall a great movie. Jeff Daniels was born to play General Washington. Had this battle gone south for the Americans, would there be a United States today; as we know it?
Directed by Robert Harmon. Based on the novel of the same name by Howard Fast, it stars Jeff Daniels as George Washington. Also appearing in the film are Roger Rees as Hugh Mercer, Sebastian Roche as John Glover and Steven McCarthy as Alexander Hamilton.
In 1776, less than six months after the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Army, under the command of General George Washington, was on the brink of utter defeat. Low on men, cannons and supplies, Washington decides to risk everything on one last desperately daring attack on the town of Trenton where over 1000 of the feared Hessian mercenaries are garrisoned. However to do that, the army must cross the Delaware to a seemingly hopeless battle that would turn out to be more successful than Washington ever dreamed of.

That poor Cheeky fella. He was marching along, thinking to himself "If I survive this battle today, I'm going to dine on a nice dish of Yorkshire Pudding and Rost Beef tonight"
BANG! Musket ball plops into him "OOF!"
