in 1955, two guys were the last people to see lam and it was stored in vault number 7 in the mgm studios. in 1967, there was a studio fire and the films were destroyed. the last known print of lam was gone forever. mgm did a world wide search but no luck. the chopped up "greed(1925)" was destroyed too but they found a few prints that existed. but lam is gone forever.
over the years after 1967 horror film magazines such as famous monsters of filmland kept talking about it as a lost film.
in 1999, i guess i was looking through my horror film magazines and i saw a picture of lam and i didn't really know what a lost film was back then. i went on the internet and i found out that it has been a lost film for decades. i seached on
www.tv-now.com
around october and checked the tv listings for lon chaney,sr. and i almost had a heart attack when i saw lam on the tv listings for october. my eye balls almost fell out of my head. i checked the tcm website and i found out that it is a reconstruction of the lost film. i said so what! i still want it. i thought it was on at 8pm, so i waited until then and my mom checked the guide on the tv and it said lam started 10 minutes ago at 5pm and i started to have another heart attack and i almost fainted and started running upstairs with a blank tape and cursing. i taped it and i missed over 20 minutes of the reconstruction. i'm glad it's coming out on dvd in the lon chaney sr. dvd box set in october. i was angry all night and couldn't injoy my halloween night much.
i have been searching the web like mad ever since that night trying to get some answers.
i have been trying to get this question answered. "is there a print that exist of lam and a guy is waiting for the copyright to expire in 2022?.
so that's my tragic story.
