That's what it's like to be me: Croupier
Ely Prussin has worked in the Las Vegas gambling industry for half his life.
Here he explains what makes a good croupier and why he no longer plays himself.
Vegas stands above everything for me and without a doubt also stands above other gambling centers like Macau. There'll never be a comparable place in the world.
We're adult Disneyland.
I've been gambling here since I was 25. I started in a well-known hotel in 1996 as a croupier playing blackjack. In the US we call it
"dealer"
. I could write a book about gambling and what it does to people.
But my employer probably won't like to see that. Few dealers talk about their job, the casinos even forbid it.
“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”
is always the motto.
The casino is a protected space where you can escalate within certain limits if you want.
I'm not a friend of moralists who judge when people let themselves go on vacation.
When my guests are happy, so am I.
“I used to have a bad conscience when we earned money at the expense of an addiction.
But you lose that over the years"
Players are very different.
Some want to talk and have fun, they leave their money in the casino like others go shopping. You've a limit, never bet more money than planned. But of course there are the uncontrolled gamblers and gambling addicts.
We at the bank don't evaluate that: the customer decides.
Sure, I used to have sympathy, maybe even a guilty conscience when we just made money from an addiction. But you lose that over the years.
If you suffer from gambling addiction, you can get help.
The casinos provide information about offers of help, and players can have themselves blocked.
Gambling is primarily entertainment. If you expect to win, you lose; who thinks they're on a lucky streak, too. You should only ever spend the money you don't need and be happy when you win with this pocket money.
For me, this is the only healthy way to gamble.
People have a responsibility when they sit down at the gaming table, for themselves and often for family members as well.
Of course in almost 30 years of Vegas you see people ruining themselves with gambling.
Dealers also. They see that someone wins big with them and think after work: I can do that too!
And then gamble away the $500 they earned in total tipping that day.
That's a lot of money for us, but a piece of cake for some players.
Envy is a very bad quality for a croupier. You've to be able to give.
Greed is also fatal. There aren't only players, but also dealers who cheat.
By diverting money and chips, for example, or by outwitting drunks who can no longer manage on their own. There's always cheating, but we record everything on video. Scams are quickly uncovered.
And then your career in Vegas is over.
"There aren't only players, but also dealers who cheat. There's always cheating.
But we record everything on video."
As a dealer you should remain humble and maintain a healthy relationship with money.
You earn several thousand dollars per month, which some players gamble away in an hour.
A regular dealer in Vegas gets $100 to $300 a day plus tips.
After my job as a croupier I rose through the ranks.
First I was something like the boss of the dealers in my casino, today I'm Director of Player Development.
I keep the players happy, I
"lure them"
into coming to Vegas and playing with us. We plan and organize your complete Vegas trip, from the flight to the golf course to the steakhouse. I mainly take care of the
"high rollers"- clients who play $5,000 a hand and up. They come from all directions, from Nevada, California, Utah, Colorado or Massachusetts. A very diverse American audience plays here.
The world of gamers fascinates me and that will never change.
I don't play at all myself.
That's a decision you, as a dealer, should rather make early than late.
I learned from my own early attempts: you can't win, so don't.
Since then I'm more relaxed.

On celeb wife swap watch Vince Meal bet 200k on one roll like it was pocket change.
Celebrity Wife Swap Season 4 Episode 6

You mean Vince Neil, singer of Mötley Crüe?
Sorry, cannot watch the video clip yet (blocked due to copyright reasons).
And seems my YT-unblocker needs again an update. ☻
$200,000 is a number!
Btw. I'm a very good poker player if it's about candy or gummi bears.
If it's about money I only think how long I would need to work for
THAT
money on the table.
Huge mistake…I lose. -

Aw sh*t. Sorry you can't view it in your country, Tara. Yes he switched with Gunner Hanson's wife for a week for the TV show. She was stunned at how he lives in Las Vegas gambling that kinda of money she said is like her daughters' college funds.
Tell you what…When I send my ex-wife her money…you can lick the stamps. -

Sorry, but betting that amount is sick…even if you've much money.
He could throw his money out of the window, that's faster.
Did he leastwise win? -

No. He even made the womp womp sound and said "let's keep going."
You're right it's insane.
WOOF!…I would've fried him!
For minimum one week would tell him how he could've spent the money better.
(e.g. animal shelter, new economy)
If she has access to his bank account she could take $200,000 and start the next campfire with it. But he probably finds that amusing too.
